The El Pitazo journalist said there is no commercial fishing industry in the town where the first alleged drug boat originated. Only what we might call “pesca artesanal.”

Journalist from Vzl news org El Pitazo said after the first boat was blown up, killing 11, that drug traffickers have controlled the area for four decades and any visiting reporter would immediately be flagged. A visit would need to be pre-arranged. youtu.be/q7rZnUcRRQw

I know this is a very difficult story to report … but finding out whatever we can about these people being killed in extrajudicial executions at sea seems like a pretty high priority right now.

Mark, this is great and I’m proud the AP is matching the moment. WIRED deserves an A. Its DOGE coverage set the pace.

Some people would like us to forget about the Hague. That ain’t happening.

Great question. I have been asking journalist friends closer to where the slain men lived. If in my old job overseeing the Andes for AP, I’d be pushing to get their story. There are security concerns, travel costs & relatives are likely fearful & reluctant - I expect we’ll hear eventually.

Sorry, but I refuse to let CNN collect data on me and there’s no opt out. Take a hike, CNN.

Gov. Newsom vetoed a bill that would have tracked data centers’ growing water footprint. He says California is “well positioned” to support the AI-driven data center boom, and he is reluctant to impose “rigid reporting requirements.” www.latimes.com/environment/...

I do think that happens in the winnowing ranks of serious journalism. I was AP’s first tech editor and hired a biotech reporter. But that was 2001 and the position was later eliminated.

I don’t disagree on the LLM industry’s profligate acceleration of global warming and resource and attention diversion. Not to mention what happens with the AI equity bubble bursts … A lot of people will be hurt.

What exactly is your objection to this piece? What in your view is Witt misrepresenting? He seems mostly to be exploring the validity of Yoshua Bengio’s greatest concerns about AI. Do you disagree that an AI-engineered pathogen may be the greatest danger to humanity from this invention?

Rare moment of journalist solidarity as major news outlets, including WaPo, NYT, CNN, Newsmax, The Atlantic, the Wall Street Journal, NPR, Reuters and the Guardian, along with the trade publications Task & Purpose and Breaking Defense, all reject new Pentagon reporting rules (no word from Fox yet)
News outlets broadly reject Pentagon rules before signing deadline
The Washington Post and other major news outlets have refused to sign the Defense Department’s restrictive new media policy, citing First Amendment concerns.

CBS News would never put a thinly sourced 'story' by a rookie blogger like this on it's air. Until now. The Free Press isn't a journalism outlet, it's bloggers aren't reporters. This piece is more NYPost than Tiffany Network but I guess that's the goal.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity. It’s a disaster. We won’t recover.

Pope Leo laments the current “dictatorship of an economy that kills” through indifference to the poor and by encouraging avarice. He decries “ideologies that defend the absolute autonomy of the marketplace and financial speculation.” In other words, Trumpism — and the JD Vance song and dance.
