#italics
This was a timely thread! My current story has the similar challenge of one mute character who can only communicate telepathically with her twin sister.

I've been using italics but not every site supports them and it's not that clear. This thread and replies convinced me to use <these guys!>

Why don't italics ever go the other way?

She's leaning so heavily on that "we" that she might singlehandedly make Italics finally happen on social media

They are a necessary staple in winter

It's been almost a year since I wrote this, and it's now relevant for like the 6th time.

Fuck Do Nothing Democrats and their incessant Complicity.

as far as I remember 4chan doesn't have italics so it'd have to be another site
January 27, 2026 at 12:08 AM
Are there unnecessary italics?

and it always goes

"The following Post was removed:" followed by said Post in italics. I can't properly phrase how funny this is to me.

I keep hearing from friends in the real world that I should perhaps use my Bluesky (rhymes with Russkii?) account more. I can't quite figure it out yet though. I'll maybe try italics and a picture. (Zagreb, 2016)

The fact that I can use different fonts (types, italics, bold, ...) in one print blows my mind. In case that sounds weird, this is my own "engine" (I don't think it qualifies as an engine, but it's not too far away anymore)

Italics are an important tool! So it's boldface. I use them both in Discord because it's easy to do. Elsewhere, I use quotes for titles even though it's incorrect because that's a tool that works here. I suppose that it's fallen away because it's an actual font change instead of a character code.

Double spacing and italics too. I want it all gone. I can start from square one, or use Cmd - Z if I didn’t want that but please for the love of Christ or whomever you find holy don’t just keep doing the wrong thing over and over again while I have no idea why you think that’s what I want you to do.

are ppl collectively over italics? I‘d really love to use italics here.
January 26, 2026 at 5:05 PM
That would be nice, too. 😗

I also think it's be nice to have a rich text editor, bc sometimes you just *need* italics. 😤😤

like an ant that can lift many times it own weight

the tiny particle "ja" does a lot of work in this slightly inelegant DE sentence

dictionary might give "indeed" or "certainly"

but, esp. with the italics, it might be better as

"indeed what might be called..."

okay so! do ctrl+h for find and replace.

Click in the find box, go to More > Format > Font, select Italics under font style.

In the replace box, type <i>^&</i> and it will html all your italics for you.

How about this?

This is from my interview with Ward Churchill back in 2002. Not quite your point, but still eye-opening.

I used modified BSL for merfolk communicating with humans, with a combination of italics for direct speech and description to keep reminding the reader what is happening visually (Fish! NewCon Press). Current WIP uses quotation marks - "...," she signed etc

Since my book has a lot of forms of telepathic communication, which uses italics, I'm reluctant to rely on italics alone, since all three forms of communication are different.
January 26, 2026 at 6:02 AM
For me it depends. I have written in italics in spoken grammar. But other times I will write it as it is signed, missing words and dropped articles and all.
I find that most hearing authors who write deaf characters don't often grasp the complexity and the way sign is actually works in conversation
