Class 73130 seen on the East Kent Railway Today…

73130 is a unquie locomotive, as it is the only remaining Class 73 to retain Scharfenberg couplers from its Eurostar days, between 1994 & 2007 it was used to rescue Eurostar trains in the rare occasion of a train failure.

🌱 Some days school gardening is the glamour of troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing irrigation in between school drop off, birthday cake baking, meetings, dog walks, laundry, and school pick up. Worth it because hand watering 20 garden beds is not for me!

New (sub)project: making some couplers. They are 1:8 scale models of the ones used by Arthur Heywood on his 15” gauge railways. I have two pairs of them that were commercially made many years ago to use as a pattern. They are white metal whereas I’m making six more by machining brass

I was in my 22 when it came out and at that point had been building and playing with computers since teletypes and acoustic couplers so I was so excited when this came out and saw it in the theater twice

Also has Stephen Tobolowsky who makes every thing better

Is there an existing comparison study between AAR type E couplers and Soviet SA-5's?

Like safety, tonnage limits, handling?

Finally got the chance to run 8236 during August's train show. Had it fitted with N-possible couplers and an ESU LokSound decoder. Still some details to finish, but I'm happy that the DCC Sound conversion was a success!

For over 25 years I drew train pictures for the screensaver program Traffic but I stopped drawing about a year ago to finish school. Suddenly, today, I started up again. Here are some CM&StP 28’ boxcars in 1880s-1900s versions. Scale is 10px=1 meter.

It is! There's a "language" you need to learn, how running gear (wheels and couplers) work, and standard details present in most equipment vary by world region and era, so knowing that helps a lot too.

those are really nice. i'm thinking about reversing things and putting the Z gauge Rokuhan connectors which look more like those instead of the Rokuhan-made Marklin couplers so a Rokuloco can hook up right up to Marklin cars.

Another Z scale #modelRailroad question: magnetic couplers. Any good? Does the simple magnetic decoupler track work as advertised? Does the non-magnetic Marklin decoupling track work well?

Commodore 64 as a boy… but no connectivity… I remember ads for acoustic couplers for phones but that was far beyond my world.
Using ICL’s global email system in 2nd job would have been my first ‘sort of modern’ internet’ experience (also programming COBOL & ICL VME SCL at that time).

I remember acoustic couplers and 300 baud modems. I remember perforated paper dust from the continous feed dot matrix printers. I remember Fido and Blue Board, the sound of a Hayes handshake, and the anticipation of the ASCII file.

It feels really weird for that exact reason! There is just an eerie silence and a moments delay while all the couplers squeeze up before you start moving. Especially unnerving if you’ve just got out of a noisy loco and you’re used to all the sounds telling you what’s happening

... ok, wtf curtain rods are stupid expensive.. so in the future i'm gonna just head to the homedespot, but a few lengths of 10ft 1" diameter EMT conduit, cut them to lengths that would fit in my car, get a bag of couplers, and make some damned curtain rods

Sounds like a good idea. I have no idea where to start though since I’m not very good with electronics

I’ve had two occasions already where the coupler broke because the frame would bend (and misalign the couplers). It’s a lot sturdier but there’s just too much power on this engine…

If you were to connect the locomotive(s) to the slug with a drawbar then you'd be able to bypass that restriction, I think. And you'd probably want that if you were passing traction power between the two vehicles, anyway!

Do y'all have plans to move to automatic couplers at some point?

Oh for the luvva...I ordered another shelving unit, this time from a different seller, and the post couplers were missing AGAIN. Currently on the phone with a customer service rep trying to get this straightened out. Then I'm going to email the actual manufacturer and complain.
