Supposedly when Roddenberry was shepherding Phase II into development; he took a meeting w/ Whitney; saying that writing out Rand was a mistake and he was happy to make the character a regular on the new show. At least he made a spot for her in the movie.
And it's too bad we never got the Sulu show

Dear Slasher Franchises;

Unless they start with a supernatural bent (ie: Freddy Krueger), pinning a supernatural origin retcon or resurrection to your villain only serves to take away what makes them scary and compelling (looking at you, Halloween and Friday the 13th films).
