#WordCounts
I'm about to finish my final project for the course I've been doing! I wrote a discord bot that facilitates word wars and tracks wordcounts across players. I've learned a lot in the 2 months I've been doing it, excited to get my certificate

If you've received my "I only read your query, not your manuscript" form response, you might feel perplexed about where you went wrong. Here are two lists to give you a little insight into my thought process of what does and does not affect my evaluation of your query. #writingcommunityً #amquerying

Hey so what are the average wordcounts for short books you guys might buy?

As you read newly published novels in your sub-genre, you will also calculate an estimated word count for the novel and for each chapter.

Every novel genre has its sweet spot length. This is the length of novel in common release for that genre. This varies.

OH BOY, AWS OUTAGE! TIME TO FLUFF MY WORDCOUNTS ON WA ARTICLES BY WRITING ABOUT POLITICAL CORRUPTION

Additionally, "I won't read a fic under 100k" is such a bizarre and frankly toxic way to approach choosing fic when you remember this. You are demanding literally epic-length stories for free, and acting like normal ass wordcounts are lesser.

You are missing out.
I feel like this needs to be shared, read, and understood.

For reference:
Animal Farm, George Owell – ~30k
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, C S Lewis – ~38k
The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald – ~47k
Carrie, Stephen King – ~61k
A Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K. Le Guin – ~56k

There’s a reason professors enforce wordcounts: being precise with your language is important. If you don’t limit yourself you risk losing the audience before you even make your point. If you’re doing your job as a writer you should be able to distill any supporting argument into a paragraph, max.

I don't know the specific context, but speaking on my own behalf, not all wordcounts are created equal. Longform fiction kills me. If my brain doesn't Further Sculpt The Concept with great enough frequency, it starts itching. Which is a personal shortcoming, but still

ich bin wahnsinnig beeindruckt von deinen hohen Wordcounts, mit was für einer Geschwindigkeit du einfach tippen musst D: woah!

No just about the fact they have a central place to do PDF wordcounts whereas every time I submit an article I need to google and find one (and this time found that one)

I'm curious about your planning process, if you have one, for your longform works! I am in awe of writers who achieve wordcounts in the 10's or 100's of thousands of words, as someone who primarily writes shorter one-shots.

I WILL DO A VERY GOOD JOB THEN

When I sat down to calculate my April words, I realized I'd never calculated my words for March... Oops XD Here they are. (April's words coming soon!) #amwriting #WritingCommunity #WordCounts

Finally using my Remarkable tablet again. I couldn't find a use for it other than editing. I didn't like handwriting my drafts because I find I need to see increasing wordcounts to stay motivated. It is helpful for plot notes and outlining, however, and I'm keeping my bullet journal in mine.

This is the first chance I've had to calculate my June word totals. I'm in the final stretch of edits now and looking forward to a chance to start drafting again soon! #amwriting #amediting #Wordcounts #WritingCommunity

I wrote roughly 600,000 words of WK fanfic. I couldn't forget it if I tried XD.

Btw, I'm not even the top five wordcounts for fics in that fandom. Glass Houses was at 1.2 million words last time I checked.

I’m currently in a perilous position with one foot on two projects, and a temporary lull in external work.
So if it’s not matching job for job or duelling wordcounts, then I’m up for it.
I need to fix a mistake in my first book in a historical series which won’t take long but until I do it…

THIS DRIVES ME UP THE WALL OMG I hate it so much when I'm trying to hit round number wordcounts too

I remember testing it once a long time ago, I think it's hyphenated words they treat differently?? One counts them as one word, another counts them as two? I forget what it is exactly 😭

So, with the downfall of NaNoWriMo I was looking for another program to track my wordcounts and projects. I found the perfect one with TrackBear (trackbear.app). Since I joined on January 20th, I've written 252,581 words across 5 projects. I'm proud of my streak. #writingcommunity #writesky

I mean, wordcounts. counting is the one thing we do well
April 21, 2025 at 7:14 PM
Novel word count lengths are based on traditional publishing costs. X number of pages or signatures costs X - a well-known publisher formula. More pages or signatures costs more. Readers expect books in one genre to cost similar across publishers.

Need to get my writing output up!! I just went over my monthly wordcounts for the past 7 years (tracked by 4TheWords) and I'm not happy with how much my average per month has dropped in recent years 😭
