When people think about the Titanic, they think about that freezing night in April 1912, the lifeboats slipping into black water, and the thousands who never made it out. What most people do not think about is the woman who would go on to face that kind of terror not once, but again and again. Her name was Violet Jessop. She was born in 1887 to Irish immigrant parents and grew up far from the luxury ships she would later serve on. As a child, she was seriously ill with tuberculosis, and doctors once believed she would not survive. She did. That early fight with death seemed to set the tone for the rest of her life. By her early twenties, Violet was working at sea as a stewardess and nurse. In 1911, she was aboard the RMS Olympic when it collided with the British warship HMS Hawke. The impact tore into the ship's hull and left it badly damaged. Water rushed in. Passengers panicked. The Olympic did not sink, but it came close enough to remind everyone how fragile even the largest ships were. Violet walked away unharmed. Just a year later, she found herself on another enormous liner, this time the RMS Titanic. It was the most famous ship in the world, called unsinkable by many. Violet was working as a stewardess, caring for first class passengers, helping them with meals, clothing, and comfort. When the Titanic struck the iceberg, she was ordered to guide women and children to the lifeboats. In her later writings, she described the confusion and disbelief that filled the decks. Some passengers refused to believe the ship was really in danger. Others clung to their loved ones, terrified of being separated. An officer placed a baby in Violet's arms and told her to get into a lifeboat. She did. From the small boat, she watched the Titanic disappear beneath the ocean. More than fifteen hundred people died that night. Violet survived. So did the child she had been given, whom she later returned to a frantic mother among the survivors. For most people, that would have been enough to end any desire to ever step foot on a ship again. For Violet, it was not. During World War One, she served as a nurse on the HMHS Britannic, the Titanic's sister ship, which had been converted into a hospital ship. In 1916, while sailing in the Aegean Sea, the Britannic struck a German mine. The explosion was devastating. The ship began to sink rapidly. Lifeboats were lowered into the water, but the still spinning propellers pulled some of them in and destroyed them. Violet jumped from the ship into the sea. She was dragged beneath the water and struck her head against the hull. Years later, doctors discovered she had suffered a skull fracture from that moment. Once again, she lived. Three major disasters at sea. The Olympic collision. The Titanic sinking. The Britannic explosion. Violet Jessop survived all of them.

Before the war, in 1912, Willie Mew had signed on to join Titanic’s crew as a sauce cook. Living with the Mew family at that time was a boarder called William Slight, and the pair must have signed on together, for their signatures appear next to each other on the crew list.

We don’t need to embrace them. They caused a great deal of damage, and now, all that people like MTG are doing is trying to be one of the first into the Titanic’s lifeboats. It is good she is aware of Trump‘s true colors, and is saying so publicly, but we should not confuse her for an ally.

Agreed. After the election in November, my closest friends had to remind me of this. Even something that's purely for entertainment holds a piece of protest in it when our society is trying to quash joy out of us. There are still times I feel like the string quartet on the Titanic's deck, though.

And no I'm not surprised at all, I mean, they literally scrapped Titanic's sister ship, the RMS Olympic back in 1936, and Lusitania's sister ship RMS Mauretania on the same year and same place, Jarrow.
