Tools change and programs die after being “industry standard” all the time. Dose it stop being standard? Some people still use bloody Softimage 3D somehow.

Totally agree. At CN we had Maya mainly as our 3D tool, but initially we started with Lightwave and Softimage, with Cinema 4D / Infini-D for its integration with After Effects and 3DS for its interoperability with Flame suites. There’s no such thing as a “standard”

I would also like to add that I was absolute rubbish at graphic design, and ran away to a traditional animation studio as soon as possible. In order to keep myself viable, there was a Silicon Graphics computer there, and I thought I should have a crack at learning a programme called Softimage 3D.

I’m only in it for 25.

My mentor started when you had to by IK for Softimage separately as a plug-in, and it cost like, $40,000.

Still cheaper than Steadicam. Had to have a million dollar insurance bond just to operate for that, back in the day. Rig itself was like $80,000.

That's true, but the main thing is about rendering authenticity.

Non-PBR is very difficult to achieve in modern Blender, tbh, so it definitely looks a lot higher quality than the software they would have used at the time (I believe Riven used SoftImage? No idea what FF9 used)

I went home & performed the same task on my off-the shelf copy of Softimage. It took me all of 7 mouse clicks to do the same thing.

Now imagine using the new app to light something really big, like an entire cityscape.

You see the problem. Thankfully, so did the studio exec when I pointed it out.

I used trueSpace fairly often from about 99 to 06. I don't remember how I found it either, probably a disk in one of the 3D art mags. I was sad when Microsoft killed it

I tried Lightwave and softImage, but preferred trueSpace. I try Blender every now and then but can't quite get into it.

I had to make a choice what to do with those hours, and chose writing instead. CG is a lot of fun, but it eats up so much time and there are only so many hours in the day. I never used Blender or Lightwave, but used Maya and SoftImage XSI in production for movie FX, many years ago.
