Imagine waking up at 2am to this thing. You realize what that weird sound is as you come to your senses.

You change the channel. The same commercial plays. You start frantically flipping through the channels. Every single one is playing the same ad.

There's no escape. It's all blue lobster.
glairedaggers.bsky.social
I think I misunderstood, and I needed to lean into the *weird* more.

I would buy a recurring 2am ad slot on every cable network in the US.

This ad slot lasts for 5 minutes and simply displays a photo of a blue lobster, paired with the song "bloopin"

You are doing the equivalent of peeling the stickers off of the Rubik's cube, putting them back on, and then declaring that you have outsmarted the puzzle.

Me when somebody asks me what I would do if I had to be frivolous with money

(they are a bad person for asking this)

Maybe the reason we're so bad at this is because we're actually not terrible human beings & would rather monkey paw the fuck out of this situation.

Please, be as creative & adaptable as the people responding to your prompt, instead of petty & small minded.
glairedaggers.bsky.social
Wait I know this one so when she hits 5'10 he'll be uh

*counts on my fingers*

whew.... damn...
glairedaggers.bsky.social
* buy the IP and fund the development of, I should say.

and by self indulgent I mean "this is a Klonoa game that would specifically appeal to me. if it happens to appeal to anybody else, that's a complete accident. it is not even remotely meant to have any market appeal."
glairedaggers.bsky.social
buy the Klonoa IP so I can make Klonoa 3 real. It will of course be completely self indulgent lmao

lets say a wizard has cursed you with a lot of money. you are going to become permanently brain damaged simply by being in possession of so much money. the only way out of it is to spend a lot of money on something ridiculous and not at all useful

what would you buy to break the curse?

There was this really good Pho place in a mall not far from us & it was our go-to spot and then it closed and got replaced by a fuckin' Popeyes 😭

still very salty about that
glairedaggers.bsky.social
Oil temp might have been another factor, it's extremely hard to keep the temperature consistent on our glass top so it fluctuated a lot

Verdict: They turned out a little bit doughy, but still delicious!

Feel like the dough maybe didn't rise as much as it was supposed to? so maybe that's got something to do with it.

Gave some of them vanilla icing, some of them lemon icing, and cinnamon sugar dusting for some of the spare donut holes ☺️
glairedaggers.bsky.social
Donuts made 👏👏👏

And now we wait for them to cool...
Photo of a bunch of homemade donuts and donut holes cooling on an elevated mesh

Half of them have a purple-ish icing with black and orange sprinkles, while the other half have white icing with green/orange/purple sprinkles Photo of a bunch of spare donut holes which have been coated in cinnamon sugar dust

the weight has been replaced by the combination of celebration donuts and responsibilities
glairedaggers.bsky.social
I feel as though a significant weight has been lifted off of me, which will soon be replaced with responsibilities lmao
glairedaggers.bsky.social
celebration donuts
glairedaggers.bsky.social
Depending on how today goes, I may either attempt to make celebration donuts or consolation donuts lmfao

Anyway I think a lot about how modern engine pipelines are placing increasing emphasis on physically accurate materials & measured values & using industry standard film curves and extremely dense meshes and

It all still looks kinda weird because our lighting is still kinda fucked & we can't fix it
glairedaggers.bsky.social
This is why somewhat stylized games still tend to look better, even with far fewer fancy cutting edge techniques.

The less realistic your image is, then you get far more wiggle room in terms of image fidelity.

But in the meantime we're kind of just.... Ignoring the fact that lighting will never look right until we can do that, and choosing to chase a bunch of other random stuff and hoping it will make the image look better

And it kinda sorta does, but not nearly as much as it needs to.

Like

In order to make game lighting look right we basically need hardware that can run a Cycles equivalent render at like 60 FPS minimum, at like 50+ samples per pixel minimum (and that would need a really good denoising algorithm)

Think about how nuts hardware would have to be to pull that off.
glairedaggers.bsky.social
One of the big problems with trying to mimic the big budget film CG look in games is that fundamentally we're still so far from being able to actually do the lighting things that film can do that no matter what it's still going to look weird and flat and there's just no good way around it.
glairedaggers.bsky.social
Ah, I see.

Probably can't really implement this effect otherwise, so a bit disappointing that it seems so much heavier in Unreal than in Godot
glairedaggers.bsky.social
Just a material with a SceneColor node and classic "perturb sample position with normal in screen space" refraction trick.
