A fit, colourful triton with a dolphin bearing a trident and two fish - from large c. 200 AD #Roman mosaic pavement in the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, probably adorning floor of an auxiliary landing.
Site was discovered/excavated 1872 by John Turtle Wood working on behalf of BM.
A large (2.4 x 1.6m) rectangular mosaic with a triton pictured headed to the left. Triton's face and tray he's carrying have been partially replaced. He has a muscular chest, two hooved legs and a long curly, twisting body twirling behind, in shades of blue with yellow spiky fins running along much of the top. Above the triton's body is a dolphin in th same colours with a trident in its mouth. In each lower corner is a fish, one silvery, one more golden. The figures are bounded by a thin solid black border, a gold and yellow guilloche border and a wider solid black one.

I was healing from the C-section surgery I needed to give birth to her safely—she had been firmly planted in the breech position, just like her older sister was three years earlier. (A statistically improbable repeat that is unsurprising now, given Lucía’s penchant for doing exactly what her adored big sister does, for better or worse.) Two months previously, I had passed my PhD comprehensive examination while eight months pregnant. Sitting on the couch with Lucía at my breast, I received a phone call. “Hi Hilary, I’m calling from the Children’s Aid Society. Do you know why I’m calling?” CAS is the Canadian version of an infamous American organization many are familiar with, Child Protective Services. I did not know why she was calling. She told me they’d received an anonymous submission alleging that I have “mental health issues,” “drug abuse issues,” and that I’m using my PhD as “cover” to justify my “drug addiction.” The person claimed they were very concerned about the well-being of my two children. They lied in the letter, saying there had been “multiple attempts by family to address my drug abuse,” which is not true. My blood ran cold. I did not know what to do. Guarded, I asked the CAS worker how I should trust that she was who she said she was. She gave me her name and phone number, and suggested that I search for her name online and call her back at my convenience. In a panic, I called a friend, who is also a social worker. She gave it to me straight. “Fraudulent reports are a thing. They investigate everything just in case. You’ll probably be fine,” she said. “But I won’t sugar coat it, they do have the power to take away your kids. And you don’t have the right to withhold information. These are not the cops, you don’t have Miranda rights. You have to answer their questions. It will look worse if you don’t.” I couldn’t sleep or eat… My dissertation is available now to $10+ patrons! Many decolonial activists are attempting to address these problems. But what actually works when we ‘do activism’? Koi, Sept 2025 Colored pen illustration of several koi fish of various sizes overlapping each other as they swim under lilypads and the loose leaves of pond weeds. Four of the fish are very small and brightly colored in shades of blue green or with orange and blue or pink, blue, and purple with black and no white visible. Others are mostly white with black and red to orange or yellow spots. The four biggest fish have the most variation in color and have more shading. The top left large fish is mostly red and white to creamy yellow, with shades of orange and cool dark pink used for contrast, with large defined red spots and facing right while curling in a C. The fish swimming under its head is facing up and deeply saturated with a mostly blue back shaded with purple and green, with black spots outlined in pink down the spine, and the head has warm pink, orange, yellow, and red broken up by black spots and blobby shapes. The large fish on the bottom right is facing left and mostly horizontal with the tail curling up. It is lightly shaded in light blue, pink, and yellow, with a few spots of pink, darker blue, and mixes of these colors. Swimming under the part where the body narrows into the tail is a dark, mostly green tinted less saturated blue koi with red on its back along its tail, and pink/yellow and pink/white large spots on the head. The Aftermath, Aug 2025 Pen drawing of a landscape view inside a cave that has light coming from the left and fading into darkness on the right, with prominent stalactites and stalagmites framing the top and bottom, detailed with loose and wavy lines. The stalactites on the left are dripping. A pool is in the center, and behind it are bones of a long gone dragon, facing left with the top half of its skull while a shoulder bone, spine bones, and a long bone, possibly from a leg, are framing the pool, which has ripples from drips of water from the stalactites. The bones are covered in small, sharp crystals and on the skull are a few remaining clusters of scales. It is unclear if the dragon is simply moving in, if the dead is an ancestor or was its young, if the living dragon actually killed the other, if it's looking at the hoard with greed. Its eyes have no pupils and it has a slightly jagged appearance on its head/face. Luminous Depths, Aug 2025 Mixed pen illustration of a serpentine, bioluminescent deep sea dragon for Smaugust, curled in an S shape, with the tail at the top and head at the bottom. The body of the dragon is mostly black with shades of dark blue, purple, and dark teal, and there are brightly colored spots, with the biggest being green spots resembling the patterns of orcas and behind large barely visible black eyes. More elongated yellow, light green, and light blue spots are scattered along the trunk while smaller spots of varying colors including pink and orange line the spine. Large colorful glowing fins emerge from the middle back and under the chin, and the tail to the neck is lined on the dorsal side and underside with a continuous multicolor fin. The background is almost completely filled in with black pen, with some shapes cut out from the darkness, including squid and shark shapes near the top with light coloring in teal/purple and yellow/orange respectively, bubbles throughout, and a few strange deep sea inspired creatures, as well as distant glowing green, yellow, and purple lights. By the dragon's head is a colorful creature with a dolphin shaped body and a head with a mouth that is like the trunk of an elephant with teeth lining it. There is a large glowing coelacanth in the middle left by an orange snake, and an eel-like creature at the top with an orb by its mouth like an anglerfish near the squid. Framing everything is the very long and thinner tail and body of another creature, another sea serpent that is much bigger and has a small sail on its back like a sailfish. Decoy, Aug 2025 Against a background of warm mostly yellow lighting and framed by a cave opening colored with black, brown, purple, and orange is a serpentine form vertically positioned with what looks like a head with giant eyes tilted backwards over the back. This section is colored lightly with gel pens to create a pastel vibe in shades of vibrant pink, light green and blue, and hints of darker green, purple, and blue. It has large segments and small flaps on the edges and all over the body. In what looks like a mouth are a pair of slightly darker pincers, and the top of the "head" has a ridge of many colors, mostly light blue with red, purple, and yellow throughout. The first section is emerging from the top right of a turtle shaped shell that is very vibrantly colored with all shades of the rainbow, with yellow against blues and purples or in large spots and surrounded by red then green. A lot of the shading crosses over itself to blend things like blues and pinks, greens or oranges and yellow, etc. From the left section of the shell curls a shorter serpentine form that is more yellow, pink, and overall shaded but similar to the top segment, with a more defined head. It seems to be sleeping, with the visible eye shut, relaxed head crest drooping over the left part of its head (viewer's right) and emitting tendrils of smoke from its nostrils. The cave floor is mostly purple and blends into green at the edges.
