this was a long one that came pouring out of me today one of four poems today but this is my favorite of the daily #poetry
## Wildwood history stands across the road from its funhouse mirror reflection a simulacra of the gaudy this town is one part museum one part amusement park an imaginary past no different from main street u.s.a. with a different claim to fame all neon lights and plastic palms doo-wop disharmony by design that went over my head as a child passing by at night in the back seat of the station wagon there was no fundamental difference between the package store sign and the motels we would never stay at their mystery was their appeal places for adults or for families that came from further afield than the other side of the cape passing through the incongruity of a town called rio grande and through marshy wetlands along a river of red lights the place wasn't so poignant then mid-century motels nothing more special than places to cram tourists at the peak of the summer season sometimes we would stop for dinner as a place preserved in amber all powder blue and coral formica tables with chrome edges i was too young to connect this with the chrome rimmed dining table in the celadon metal kitchen and the massive steel window fans in the bedroom windows already antiques when i was born i accepted their reality their normality like i accepted the changing of seasons like the endless expanse of sand a mile or more perhaps between the boardwalk and the dark green ocean waves by night the beach was barren and we rarely came by during the day preferring the nighttime chaos of amusement park rides and video arcades the options expanded with age growing height and more independence some things changed and some departed but the sound of it stayed constant distant screams from rollercoasters or the repeated staccato recording of "wa-wa-wa-watch the tram car please" that echoed up and down the boardwalk dracula's castle burned down on a winter night between seasons and by then we were on our way out a child becoming a teenager on the cusp of a distant adulthood away from home so we packed up the old shore house leaving the motels and their signs the beaches and the boardwalk behind

Yesterday was chilly and it was wicked windy, a good day for a walk at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

I saw a few other people & a handful of birds.

I saw sand blowing across the beach.

I felt the wind pushing me, trying to control my forward progress.

Waikiki Beach at Cape Disappointment where Nch'i-Wána, "The Big River" meets the Pacific Ocean. Named after a Hawaiian sailor whose body washed ashore there in 1811. His ship was wrecked during an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Columbia River bar.

It was convenient to step out on our veranda to capture sunsets and lakefront scenes for the past decade, but we’re still moments away from both the Atlantic Ocean and the LaHave River, can’t complain. 🙏🏻 We went for a short drive today, I took 100 pictures, here’s four. 😊📷

Aloutia has 14 moons and a planetary ring. They're all magic in their own ways

The ocean meets a black sand beach and behind is a yellow/green river estuary. There is a slight slope downwards from the beach to the river, so the waves coming over the beach are slowly lapping down towards the river.

Started playing through Influx Redux, and while it's not the kind of puzzle game I thought it was going to be, it ticks a lot of my puzzle game boxes. Plus it's pretty. The water on the beach at sunset, even in still pics looks nice, but in motion, it's quite unique and frankly stunning!

For nine months, you swam in the salty waters of my womb. Budding sea anemone, petals of tentacle and swirl. You brushed against the taut walls of your aquarium, but when the time came, you settled in for another four weeks, burrowed deep in briny sleep. Is it any wonder we breathe underwater in our dreams. Pollywogging at the lake’s shore, coral reefing amid a surge of parrotfish. Our bodies undulate like jellyfish, lithe and supple as we drift through beacons of light. Remember the time we scrambled down the beach on the Strait of Juan de Fuca? I admired your balance as you bounded over volcanic rock to get a closer view of oyster catchers foraging among palm kelp and rockweed. Your hair fell across your shoulders in waves wild as that January sea. Afterward, your dad pulled into a micro-distillery, and we warmed ourselves with oak-barrel whiskey. Your laugh rippled like your hair, like the ocean, like the blood flushing all our cheeks. Sometimes I think about the river otters we spotted in Central Oregon. The three of us leaned out over the bridge as they wriggled their way downstream. How we ran to the other side to watch them eel away. You and tide pools hold me rapt for hours. A world both foreign and familiar. Sea urchins. Shore crabs. Purple and orange starfish. Limpets and barnacles holding fast to the rocks. When you were younger, you delighted in the seals and otters at Seattle Aquarium. Last Christmas, too. Hogan swam upside down in front of you. His mottled fur as dappled as the surface of the water, while his fringe of white whiskers swept along the glass. In your late thirties, you were too old to squeal with delight, but inside, I squealed for you. That night you boiled penne pasta in a bath of salt water and served the noodles under scallion, feta, tomato, and a splash of Gigondas. For my birthday, you pickled onions in salt water, too. Such brines, such elixirs, such broths of my undoing. (plus one stanza--not enough room for the full poem)

A breathtaking view of the Milky Way stretches across the night sky above James Island, La Push, Washington state and over the calm waters of the Pacific Ocean, as seen from Rialto Beach. James Island (called A-ka-lat in the Quileute language, meaning "Top of the Rock") is a small island located right at the mouth of the Quillayute River. In 1966, the United States Department of the Interior gave the island back to the Quileute people. It was recognized as part of their historic Quileute Indian Reservation and no people outside of the Quileute tribe are allowed on the island. The stars sparkled brilliantly on that moonless night, set against a tranquil and serene seascape that captured the majesty of nature. Subtle lights of La Push on the horizon added a sense of depth and mystery to the scene on August 21, 2025. Single exposure image.
