As the US admin tears itself apart, wrecking its economy with tariffs, attacking Democratic states with the US military, 75% of the people in Hawaii -- including non-Native Hawaiians -- now support independence from the collapsing US empire.

Hoi Kuahiwi, Aka'awa, Pi'oi, Uhi, Ulehihi

Smilax melastomifolia Sm.
According to William Hillebrand (1821-1886), a young Prussian physician and plant collector, the tuberous roots of this species was eaten as a famine food by the early Hawaiians. Other sources state that "the tubers were rarely, if ever, eaten by the Hawaiians," or "may have used been used as famine food by the Hawaiians, but apparently was not very palatable." [2,3]

The vines were used to tie rafters in homes.

Lo'ulu

Pritchardia affinis. Becc. ( Pritchardia maideniana)

Waiakea, Hawai'i

endemic, endangered
Lo'ulu (Pritchardia spp.): The hard wood of the trunk of taller species of lo'ulu were fashioned into spears by early Hawaiians.

The fruits called hāwane or wāhane were peeled and eaten by early Hawaiians. They collected young fruits. The flavor of young fruit with the soft interior is similar to coconut. The trunks lo'ulu were notched for climbing to gather the immature fruits and fronds. Older specimens still bear notches that can be seen today. [5,6,7]

The fronds, or leaves, called lau hāwane were used by the early Hawaiians for thatching and more recently as plaiting such as papale (hats) and fans.

Maiden's lo'ulu has been grown for many years on the Kona coast and probably one of the most popular loulu with Hawaiians. Loulu were planted and cultivated around Hawaiian dwellings.

Here I am with my immigration form
It's big enough to keep me warm
When a cold wind's coming
So go where you will
As long as you think you can
You better watch out, watch out for the man
Anywhere you're going

We talk about timber, oil, and mining as ecological villains. But few mention the war industry. Jet noise, live-fire zones, and low-level flight corridors carve through wildlife habitat—from bighorn sheep to bats. Training for war has always meant waging one on nature.
