Really phenomenal find in an old children's reader from 1887 -- "Don't steal this book for fear of shame" reads like an attempt at a book curse.

According to the name of the child who signed and dated it on the next page, he was 10 years old when he wrote this.

The modern greyhound originates in early mediaeval Ireland, where it was bred by monks who needed a dog flexible enough to fit into the initials in their illuminated manuscripts.

Early modern whales are so fun too look at.

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

Came across a cute little wooden box at work with a beautiful carved flower on the top.

Looked inside.

It's teeth.

been thinking a lot recently about that story of the bald eagle found dead, next to the body of a loon chick, with a hole in its heart the size and shape of a loon's beak

One of the best organizers I know in the Twin Cities has a great line, "We can't always take away the hurt, but we can take away the alone."

The Copper Hen made my wife and I's incredible wedding cake last year. They were so good to us and seeing this has me deeply emotional.

I know a lot of local businesses are having a hard time, but consider supporting them if you can. Maybe buy a gift card if you're out of state.
Broken again by this post from the cute brunch spot a block from where ICE killed Alex

How many Minnesotans need to die before they leave?

ICE needs to end this surge of agents now. It was clear two and a half weeks ago. It is especially clear now. Get out of Minnesota.

So many people on the train right now bundled up in layers clearly headed to the protest downtown. Some folks are handing out handwarmers. The windchill is somewhere around -30F. Really proud of Minnesota today.

National media should really be covering the fact thay every major school, museum, and arts institution in the Twin Cities, and hundreds of local businesses are closed tomorrow to protest federal occupation.

Nothing like this at this scale has happened anywhere in America anytime in living memory.

Some favorite artifacts from work today -- I love the little pincushion stand so much, and there are a lot of gorgeous ceramics in the collection here, but this one in particular blew me away.

I want people to know that the brand-new mayor of Saint Paul (as in, was sworn in less than a week before Renee Good was murdered) has apparently been personally delivering groceries to people afraid to leave their homes right now, and we are absolutely allowed to demand leadership that, like, cares

Person next to me on the train today had a spinning wheel, so fear not, despite everything, the Twin Cities remain delightfully weird.

Man. My poor, sweet mother--who has over the last decade shifted from being a registered Republican to the kind of progressive who is working on her Spanish in order to write letters to people in ICE detention--has taken to texting me every night to ask how things are going here in the Twin Cities.
