DID YOU KNOW that making sure people have a place to live and enough money to live on makes them less likely to commit crimes in a society that keeps finding new ways to treat poverty and homelessness as criminal offences?

DID YOU KNOW that giving people enough money to survive makes them less stabby???

"UBI's not a panacea, Iva."

I'm sure it's not, but it would be a hell of a lot more effective than whatever the fuck we're doing now.

Immersing myself in the research literature on community-based forensic mental health, and it's so infuriating because it's the most obvious shit ever.

DID YOU KNOW that giving parolees housing reduces reoffending???

DID YOU KNOW that giving parolees income support reduces recidivism???
It costs $117,000 to federally incarcerate someone for a year (and these are 2013 numbers, so definitely more now!). PWD in BC—which is, let's be clear, STILL A PITTANCE—is $16,500/year. Like, seriously, WTF are we doing??

These projects give me tremendous drive but also make me SO MAD.

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

Reading letters from the Princess Liselotte of Palantine, the German sister-in-law of Louis XIV, and it's wild because she had this super informal writing style that almost sounds like modern texts

Like at one point she goes "wish to god my son didn't love holding chunks of bread like a peasant"

Since it's the first snow day here, I wish I could do nothing but eat warm baked goods and soup, drink tea, and daydream while staring out the window at the newly white world.

There's time, though, I think. At least a bit. Before I need to move.

My son wakes up at 6AM every day. EVERY day. On weekdays, he comes into my bedroom and chats in a way that is both stressful and exhausting for me. Because it helps him feel grounded in the day & connected to me, we've been doing it this way for years. But it's been harder on me than I realized.

@sarahmillswrites.bsky.social A purpose for all the cranberry sauce you want to look at but not eat yourself.
The cranberry goblins love eating cranberries as much as they love swallowing human souls, so it's best to just leave them some cranberries.

Addendum to this excellent post:

You do not have to be good at something to have fun.

Don't hold yourself up to hyperrealistic or professional or your favourite ___ standards.

You're new and learning!
Be YOU, not a copy of someone else.
I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

I can't tell if I've normalized grief or completely dissociated from the experience of grief, but I have zero discomfort with letting grief/grieving be part of regular conversation.

Canada made weird tv shows because it was all being done with government funded art grant money so they fell in this wacky middle ground between “shoestring budget” and “no expectation to generate shareholder value” which is really the best way to make art
