"Urban elites in Tulsa" is a great microcosm of the contradictions in US politics
The Oklahoma senator who sponsored a new law to curtail citizen initiatives said he wants to “give more Oklahomans, not just the urban elites in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, a say in what questions qualify for the ballot.”
Republicans Add New Barriers to Oklahoma’s Dizzyingly Fast Process for Citizen Initiatives
A new law adds to a string of GOP-run states that have undercut direct democracy by piling on onerous new regulations and raising the threshold for signatures.

very easily talked someone out of supporting newsom for president by mentioning his actions toward trans and homeless people 👍 a lot of people just don’t know these things, I don’t think beating him in the primary will be difficult

something that doesn’t come up a lot in discussions about college students choosing a major they love vs one they think will make money is the fact that many college students are thinking about how to reach escape velocity from abusive or overbearing family

the over the top thanking stuff was kind of silly (we aren't volunteers) but just being treated like humans was really cool

In April 2024, Behn opposed a resolution expressing support for Israel and its right to defend itself and condemning the Oct. 7 attacks. “Israel is committing genocide, funded by the United States, and this resolution condones genocide,” Behn said in debate on the resolution.

part of the reason why we got here is that we reflexively dismiss things as “moral panic”, “we always say that about the youth”
This is not a "students today" post--it's more "this is a new form of dysfunction" that doesn't look exactly like it's been in previous decades. It's more than just "first-year chaos." It's an across-the-board inability to process instructions, engage with longer texts, and *connect* with others.

I can’t deal with the arrogance of it all. We are in serious trouble in this country and these two are wasting energy, attention and resources we cannot afford to waste.

Ppl need to get over Corbyn and move on. That party isn’t going anywhere.

I joined the Greens
Interviewer: Zarah Sultana is obviously another big voice in the party

Corbyn: Yes, she's here

Interviewer: Are you friends?

Corbyn: We're colleagues in parliament and we obviously communicate and we'll see each other tomorrow in the conference.

Jeremy Corbyn declines to call Zarah Sultana a friend as Your Party holds first conference
Ms Sultana had previously claimed she was being "sidelined" by a "sexist boys' club" within the fledgling party.

If speech was free we wouldn’t have to live in fear of highly litigious cranks with cash to burn on legal harassment
ICYMI: Robert Kennedy Jr., who has sought to cast himself as a free speech advocate, spent the last 5 years pursuing (with help from Children’s Health Defense) an anonymous Daily Kos blogger for summarizing a German news story about him. That case finally ended in Sept.

I spoke with that blogger.
NEW: I spoke with David Vickrey, the Daily Kos blogger Robert Kennedy Jr. spent the last five years pursuing in court with a dead-end, costly defamation lawsuit.

Here’s what he had to say:

This week, I talk to @tamaranopper.bsky.social about abolition in practice — how people learn through engagement with state violence, what gets in the way of developing shared analysis, and why abolitionists need to take recruitment and counter-recruitment seriously.

we need a campaign to get democratic representatives and senators to state their position on abolishing ice and then write letters to local newspapers about it.
before DHS.) I imagine that any real attempt to abolish ice by the democrats might be tied to additional funding for local police, but they will probably do that anyway.

abolishing ice feels like the most important medium term political goal.
November 28, 2025 at 7:11 AM
abolishing ice can be made conceptually moderate-friendly imo. either potential justification for its existence is bad: its purpose is either to terrorize peaceful immigrants who live here or to go after a specific group for stuff that’s already illegal for everyone.
