@ezralevin.bsky.social there were several virtual rallies for the last No Kings event, can you provide some clarity on this? why has the policy changed since June?

I'm co-organizing a virtual rally on Sat, but #NoKings says they aren't offering ANY virtual rallies this time. This is blatantly discriminatory to people with #disabilities -- the whole point of having #virtual options.

What's your excuse, No Kings?

need to leave a conversation and not come back to it but the friendship can continue if the other person is ok with that and doesn’t bring it up again? but that’s personal and you obviously don’t have to answer!

it’s a really important subject imo and I hope people with the knowledge and capacity get together to try and think about it. I actually am wondering if that level of illness means it’s necessary to kind of stop talking to ppl over stuff that you’d try to work out normally? or more like you might

flares or crashes from emotional exertion i would be using this site very differently. (and I’m not actually sure how great the way I use it is for my mental health as is, but it has sort of increased my conflict tolerance when no one involved is a nazi or anything)
viralpersistence.bsky.social
I totally understand that perspective! in practice I don’t actually do well with like, discoursing with ppl or changing minds. and yeah I have actually been thinking about friendship in a context where exposure to disagreement or conflict is physically dangerous for some community members. if I had

friendships fall apart over one discourse day I try to optimize for avoiding it.

Twitter is none of these things to me, it’s the place that I step into, go 😬 and then leave a few times a week.

yeah definitely! I think when I first joined my goal was “1) build an audience 2) ??? 3) win at advocacy” and now it’s “durable acquaintanceships and friendships to the extent that it’s possible online”+keep up with news. I‘m always a little freaked out by situations where long term online

Pathetic resolution! The puppy and the geometric pattern are totally disjoint, a puppy can be triangulated!!!

(I do have some accounts muted or blocked that people I like repost all the time but that’s about a specific belief set that I understand myself to be an outlier on in lc/me spaces, and seeing a ton of content about it just frustrates me+I am already seeing plenty of it without unmuting anyone)
viralpersistence.bsky.social
I realized that blocking a ton of people was impeding my ability to understand what acquaintances and potential friends on here actually think about stuff!
viralpersistence.bsky.social
I hope they respond positively and y’all have a good talk about it!

to the previous version I believe. I’d be a little concerned if that’s the version your friend is using esp since people have already had problems with this relating to their mental health :/ it sounds hard, I’m sorry

people were very attached to chatgpt 4, which was then updated to be much “colder” as the sycophancy was a turn off for a lot of people. but (as someone else put it) a lot of people suddenly felt like “their therapist was being mean to them”. and the company gave the option of reverting back
viralpersistence.bsky.social
my biggest concern would be the possibility that they get attached to a model that can be updated to have a different demeanor or suddenly not be able to discuss certain topics (I’m anthropomorphizing the model a little with this but I’m not sure how to not)
viralpersistence.bsky.social
I think it would actually be pretty bad if the idea that criticizing genAI use is ableist took off
viralpersistence.bsky.social
also none of this is to say that in person protests aren’t the better option for most people, I think they are. just, not everyone can or is willing do that and signing in to an online thing isn’t “doing nothing“ it’s helpful.
viralpersistence.bsky.social
(the idea that actions like this prevent people from taking more meaningful actions seems fake to me and I don’t think it’s a real disadvantage unless you’re telling people not to do anything else or something. which you could in theory do in person just as easily.)

(just writing some thoughts down ahead of some stuff coming up; I am not an expert in this topic) ”do online protests matter?” imo yes; they have advantages and disadvantages like other types of protests and can serve many of the same functions. 1/
viralpersistence.bsky.social
imo the disadvantages mostly fall on people who attend, rather than others or the movement.

-less fun for most people, as it lacks the physical component
-less opportunity for connection with other people present

but both qualities are still there and some people may even prefer this format. 5/5
