(the idea that actions like this prevent people from taking more meaningful actions seems fake to me and I don’t think it’s a real disadvantage unless you’re telling people not to do anything else or something. which you could in theory do in person just as easily.)

imo the disadvantages mostly fall on people who attend, rather than others or the movement.

-less fun for most people, as it lacks the physical component
-less opportunity for connection with other people present

but both qualities are still there and some people may even prefer this format. 5/5

advantages of a virtual demonstration:

-physical safety
-possible for people to join who can’t demonstrate in person
-more options for an interesting group of speakers across the country

last thing is important, as what speakers say at protests matters as well. 4/

people feeling strongly enough about something to make a whole thing of it, but without anything dramatic happening, is worth reporting on to whoever. it’s not direct action, so a lot of the purpose is the perception. many in-person demonstrations don’t involve direct action either. 3/

an online demonstration carries the possibility of press coverage to some extent, just like other peaceful demonstration. it’s “not interesting enough to cover” the same way people standing in a grocery store parking lot with signs isn’t interesting enough. or it is interesting enough, if enough 2/

Agree. I hosted a virtual No Kings rally this summer. Would love to know why this is different. The woman who emailed from No Kings said we can just watch a live stream from NYC. Excuse you? We have voices, too, and we want representation.

(just writing some thoughts down ahead of some stuff coming up; I am not an expert in this topic) ”do online protests matter?” imo yes; they have advantages and disadvantages like other types of protests and can serve many of the same functions. 1/

Silencing disabled voices is not cool, @ezralevin.bsky.social. You have some explaining to do. "They can watch the Livestream from NYC" is not the answer.

You take the platform from us, we demand to know why.

Why do you hate people with disabilities?
rubyslippahs.bsky.social
I'm co-organizing a virtual rally on Sat, but #NoKings says they aren't offering ANY virtual rallies this time. This is blatantly discriminatory to people with #disabilities -- the whole point of having #virtual options.

What's your excuse, No Kings?

That’s really terrible, leaving up to 30% of the population out.

@ezralevin.bsky.social hi! um, read previous, i'm not tl;dring that right now

i will say i feel put out that i made a massive A1 size poster for no kings last time and i barely have time to do posters for other orgs now, with this knowledge.

i'd like to make fliers for organizations that want it?

rubyslippahs.bsky.social
Please do. Because *I* hosted a virtual rally last time.

Do you just hate disabled folks?

Quick update on what we just saw here—*before curfew*, ISP troopers, Broadview PD and CCSO deputies began menacing demonstrators outside the ICE facility. Several arrests.

Pepper ball guns at the ready, a bit of a standoff going with remaining protesters. All people are doing is playing music.

The cruelty of saying “hospitals are ready” by increasing ICU beds and body bags… instead of fixing the ventilation.

Just mull over that for a bit #MedSky.
