Yep. And you've gotta DO IT. Commit, lean into it. Make it the best darn (metaphorical or otherwise) bagpipe break you can possibly manage.

Don't wonder if you can or should. Wonder how anyone can even begin to stop you (they can't).
Protip for writers: you want to do the weird thing, you gotta just *do it*

If AC/DC can pull off a *bagpipe break* in It's A Long Way To The Top, you can get us to care about your weird little thing

I like that the MN National Guard are very obviously there in support of the protestors, but at the same time… Really? ICE have straight murdered 2 members of your population in the service of kidnapping & disappearing several hundred more, including multiple literal children. Needs more than donuts
Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.

If you're being at all honest, you know that, at this point, "abolish ICE" is the mainstream moderate position.

I’m so weary of coming to any of the two apps I want to use to escape the world, only to be presented with summary executions and child death. I just want to learn about new books in my area and what movies look good, but instead I can feel my blood pressure spike and my brain seize. I hate it.

THIS IS SOMETHING YOU GET TO LEARN IN A SKEET, AND NOT, AS I DID, IN A KAYAK ON LOWER SABAO LAKE IN MAINE, AS ONE SURFACED RIGHT THE FUCK NEXT TO ME.
Moose are great swimmers, can fully submerge for 30+ sec, & dive up to 5m deep! When a moose submerges its head, the difference btwn water pressure & air pressure causes specialized structures w/in moose nostrils to seal the nose! The deeper they dive, the greater the pressure, the tighter the seal!
Quote this skeet with a random fact you love, that brings you joy, I'll start:

Otters have pockets. The skin under their armpits makes a natural fold that they keep things in.

We have all talked a lot about how folks in Minnesota are being very brave and running toward danger and it’s true and I think it’s equally true that we are being run ragged and we’re starting to wear thin in places. We’ll keep going, but it’s also true.

I get why they have to do it but it is never going to stop being funny when a copyeditor is like "I couldn't find this term in Google, pls confirm you are using it correctly" and I have to keep writing "It's a fantasy novvle, I made it up"

"It's a secondary-world fantasy"
"I invented that plant"

This is CRITICAL. I know you’re all putting your back into mutual aid & a thousand other great things, but if there’s anything left here, so many folks depend on these front-line lawyers right now.
I spoke to a friend on the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota board. They need financial donations to keep up with the heightened demand for their services: www.ilcm.org

ILCM is a nonprofit that provides free immigration legal representation to low-income immigrants and refugees in MN & ND

My absolutely brilliant plan of finishing a book in the middle of winter and starting to work on marketing it (something I loathe) is somehow not doing anything at all to combat my depression. Funny, that.

genuinely cannot tell if I've legitimately gotten worse at expressing myself and/or connecting with other people since covid and wfh, or if I'm just much more aware nowadays of a shortcoming I've always had.

If you're a writer, wondering why you should bother writing with the world on fire. It feels like it's not important, I need you to understand that it is.

Even if it is just because it keeps you moving forward? Even if it only brings YOU joy, that gives you energy to fight & survive.

John Bellairs is most known for his book The House with a Clock in Its Walls, but did you know he wrote a small series of stories set in Minnesota featuring occult mysteries? He did! The Anthony Monday books, illustrated by Gorey. These novels had an influence on me as a native Midwesterner artist.
