CAN MN and Local Schools Book Drive
Red Balloon is gathering donations for Community Aid Network MN and a few local schools who will distribute the books to kids who are currently staying home. We are asking for mostly Spanish titles for ages 0-11. Books can also be purchased online or in-store and donated using the code CANMN20. Monetary donations will be used to purchase books. Community Aid Network MN serves between 200-300 families each week with free food, diapers and supplies, distributing 1,000 items every distribution day. They started during the George Floyd Uprising and are one of the only mutual aid sites still in operation. Their mission is to organize volunteers, redistribute resources, build mutual aid bonds with their neighbors, and ensure everyone has the means for dignified survival. I like that the MN National Guard are very obviously there in support of the protestors, but at the same time… Really? ICE have straight murdered 2 members of your population in the service of kidnapping & disappearing several hundred more, including multiple literal children. Needs more than donuts
Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.

I’m so weary of coming to any of the two apps I want to use to escape the world, only to be presented with summary executions and child death. I just want to learn about new books in my area and what movies look good, but instead I can feel my blood pressure spike and my brain seize. I hate it.

We have all talked a lot about how folks in Minnesota are being very brave and running toward danger and it’s true and I think it’s equally true that we are being run ragged and we’re starting to wear thin in places. We’ll keep going, but it’s also true.

My absolutely brilliant plan of finishing a book in the middle of winter and starting to work on marketing it (something I loathe) is somehow not doing anything at all to combat my depression. Funny, that.
