A bolt of lightning streaks behind them in the background. the figures' eyes are glowing. Cover image: an elaborate landscape illustration of the Midwestern prairie. Papercut scrollwork frames the title of the book. Text: Goblin Hill

Image: a perspective drawing of a long low rambling residence built in the prairie style. It is perched on a hilltop in rural Wisconsin and built of stone, stucco, and cedar. The house is wrapped around a hilltop on three sides, terminating in a short tower. The broad roof shelters many windows, porches, and enclosed balconies. Text: N P C

Image: a skeleton in decaying motley is seated against a dank stone wall in a deep dungeon. The floor is cobbled stone and beside him is a rickety cloth and pole sign advertising various wares for sale. The skeleton raises a single shining coin. The text bubble below him reads:
RATTLING AGGIE
"Ah! Brave traveller! We've descended quite far have we not? Do not fear my visage, I still have wares to sell thee if you've coin or rot to spare!"

These guys cling to it as if bloodline is the most important thing and it's like... are you polishing up the ole family crest buddy? What's your legacy buddy? A start-up idea and a used kia sorento? They're chuds.

In the minds of many Americans, we traded ‘the pursuit of happiness’ for ‘fend off desperation’ long ago. Settling for such grim motivations feels like an absolute failure of imagination for creatures who are natural crafters of meaning, for creatures who need whimsy and ritual to thrive.”

They aren’t working in pursuit of something. They are working avoidance of something. For many, especially those without the safety nets of robust support systems of family wealth, that’s the nature of our society.

“When I talk to my peers about work, a majority of them tell me they work to avoid consequences. Unpaid bills. Loss of healthcare. Homelessness. Endless other variations on that theme.

Title: Faerie Fruit on the Roadside

Seen near Fletcher, Ohio

Image of a run-down and abandoned roadside produce stand at dusk. Instead of normal fruit, the produce stand is covered in an array of strange alien fruits and vegetables, wine decanters, and cakes. The food glows gently in the coming night. In the distance is a foreboding copse of trees standing alone in a field.
