Whether this was random street crime or targeted political violence, I think it was bad for the president to unnecessarily put the National Guard in harm’s way like this. They simply don’t need to be there.

I was stuck in the Atlanta airport for 3 days during the internet blip that blew up air travel in 2024. It was the day after the RNC, which I was covering, so I was dressed professionally. Lesson learned: the smart people travel in pajamas and slippers.

Especially given how much is being ignored. Nobody — And I repeat, NOBODY in media is adequately documenting the atrocities happening in Memphis. We are rarely even mentioned among cities under Federal occupation.
It strikes me that it’s going to be up to us to make sure there is a cultural memory for what’s been happening in the last 15 years. It’s clear that if we don’t force a drastic change of perspective on basically every institution, all of this will get memory holed or “reinterpreted” to be less awful
