This is, in my opinion, not only the correct moral/ethical/legal position but also the correct political framing. Everyone can see the agency is out of control; everyone can see that it is constantly violating human rights. "Scrap it and start over" is the moderate position.
Mamdani: "I am in support of abolishing ICE. What we see is an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist. We're seeing a government agency that is supposed to be enforcing some kind of immigration law, but instead what it's doing is terrorizing people."

As of Thursday, ICE-Gestapo was holding over 73,000 people in their concentration camps, a record amount in their disgraceful 23 year history.

They aren’t a law enforcement agency, they are a militarized terrorist organization that should have been disbanded long ago.

The statute of limitations for violations of federal law is 5 years.

Your photographs, videos, and livestreams can be used as evidence in future cases.

So while this Administration may not hold anyone accountable, a future Administration will.

ICE must be abolished. It has become a lawless, rogue agency. Federal law enforcement agencies must follow the law, if they're going to have any credibility enforcing it.

We are demanding justice for Renee Good and the prosecution of ICE agent Jonathan Ross for her murder.

I'd go on to say the US loses legitimacy as a state the longer he holds office at all.

His candidacy, not his election, his CANDIDACY in 2024 was constitutionally invalid in a normal reading of the 14th amendment. He took part in an insurrection, and should have been banned from running for office!

Congress should pass a law requiring agents to show their faces, identify themselves, & wear their badges. It’s not agent safety we have to worry about these days.

End so-called Kavanaugh stops & admin warrant-based forced entry into homes too. Let’s have a Constitution.

This is the way and every single Democrat should be on board.

It won't get anywhere before the midterms, but it will make the midterms easier for Democrats to win and easier to take action on these promises once they do.

Be the party of accountability. Own that space, starting now.

i think powell's response here is a demonstration of the folly of the idea that democratic accountability requires presidential control. what if the president is not acting in the public interest? you want independent agencies to be able to push back and pursue their *congressional mandate*

"The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Fed setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President."

The past couple days have made it clear that arresting and prosecuting Johnathan Ross isn’t just the right thing to do, it is necessary to prevent future violence by ICE who have interpreted the situation as “we can do that to whoever we want”
A woman recording an ICE agent tells him "Shame on you."

The agent responds, "Have you all not learned from the past couple of days?"

"Learned what?" she asks

Then he knocks her phone out of her hand

It appears ICE murdered someone in cold blood today and their plan is — per usual — to create a fog of lies so the killer does not face justice. We simply can't let that happen. The shooter has to be arrested and so does Bovino. They can't just kill people on the street.

After what they’ve done to the innocuous phrase “diversity, equity & inclusion” (DEI) I truly hope you can see that they will always distort our words.
I think we could have had our cake and ate it too by saying "Reform the Police."

Same implicit message, but harder for adversaries to twist it.

Wrote a piece for @slate.com explaining that states have a long history of prosecuting federal officers when they allegedly use excessive force. Federal officers are only immune from such prosecutions when they act reasonably in carrying out lawful duties.
Minnesota Could Prosecute the ICE Shooter. Trump Can’t Pardon Him.
Shortly after an ICE officer shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis, city leaders began looking into whether the officer had violated state criminal law.

Excellent, clarifying piece on the (real) legal pathway that Minnesota has to prosecute the ICE agent who shot and killed a woman today.

No, federal agents do not have absolute immunity from start charges, no matter what the Trump administration claims.

This is literally what they do whenever a Black person is killed by police. No matter how solid the evidence is, they will keep pushing that lie, not just to poison the conversation and make sure the killer walks free, but to reassert the political idea that these people deserve to be killed.
The shooting is shocking enough but the government's response is off the charts when you consider that this incident is forensically documented on video.

Can you accept - even w/o agreeing with all our positions - that Black people know profound truths about this country that are not on Schoolhouse Rock?

Now that the tactics they’ve used in our communities are becoming national policy, are you ready to concede that you need our “expertise” as well?
I’m glad to see Bill say this. But when after a century of just the type of abuse we saw today - relentless and cruel, ensnaring our children and intimidating our communities - young Black people said in frustration, anger, and demand for change “defund the police” - so many of you denounced them.

We need to dismantle DHS. We need restitution. And we need trials.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but cops are not allowed to shoot people just because you didn't do what they said.

That is called murder when they do that.

Some cops are working hard to convince people otherwise.
