💫📚 books read in 2025 📚💫

1. The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner: I hadn't found a bookt that drew me in so far this year, so I decided to reread this series and what an excellent idea that was! I'm still finding new things to scream about - it's just incredibly brilliant. Gen!!!!

I imagine most of the people trying to claim that stealing indie ebooks is leftism simply have never had to worry about paying rent or for groceries but sorry, your desire for free luxury goods is outweighed by the material needs of their creators

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

lrp: I keep being told by pro-AI people that I "can't hold out forever!" when it comes to avoiding it but as long as I can follow a real recipe by a real person and read a real book by a real person, like FUCK I can't hold out forever

I am stuck between how much I hate all this for the people who have their work stolen and how much I am frustrated by people who believe they should be able to do absolutely nothing to verify where something is coming from and still be confident it’s going to work.
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

"Dogs don't bark at parked cars" is an all-time great line
"My mentor always tells me, 'Kim, dogs don’t bark at parked cars." They’re coming after critical race theory, 1619, intersectionality because these ideas mobilized people. They gave them the language to actually articulate what they were seeing with their own eyes," says Kimberlé Crenshaw.

Always worth taking a moment to remind you if you’re pirating authors’ book you’re a shitty person. You can rail that our profession isn’t a profession all you want. You can paint yourself as an online revolutionary liberating ideas. It’s all bullshit.

You’re just a shitty person who hates writers.

once I got my degree I took the summer off because my brain was crispy, and then I took two semi-decent jobs to make ends meet, and then my current boss emailed me to ask if I wanted to come in for an interview at my old university

14 years later, I am still there

I am never leaving

never ever

I was feeling bad about spending a lot today (mostly on bills, but also on lunch/fabric/picking up preordered books) and how I'd get behind on my financial goals but then I looked at my ACTUAL statement and realized that as of today I have my six month emergency savings

two months ahead of schedule

authors you have the chance to do the funniest thing right now
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

Zoe's Animal Rescue Society in Edmonton has emptied their funds taking in some animals who need expensive surgeries. They were slammed pretty hard this year, and [gestures wildly at the world] donations aren't meeting the demand.

Please share/help as you can.
