POSSESSION SYNOPSIS (Not For Publication) After a long absence, a man (Sam Neill) returns home to find that his beautiful young wife (Isabelle Adjani) is leading a double life. Indeed the young woman has always been pro-miscuous: tiring quickly of her lovers and abandoning them. She seeks a fulfillment that has always eluded her; that she has never been able to discover in work, in marriage, nor even in her innermost self. She and her husband have a son, and she looks after him by day, but she disappears from their apartment at night and reappears only the following morning. The husband cannot resign himself to this fate and refuses to admit that his marriage is a failure. Not unexpectedly, his rival (Heinz Bennent) turns out to be his exact opposite. Where the husband is plodding, the lover is worldly. Nevertheless, they have something in common; the lover is every bit as frustrated as the husband, for his mistress is cheating on him as well. And the third "partner" it seems, is what really counts in her life. She keeps his identity a secret — so jealous a secret that she almost let's herself be run over by a truck one day when her husband is following her, rather than allow the third man's identity to be revealed. In desperation, the husband hires a private detective. But the wife kills the detective when he discovers the existence of the sorry little apartment she rents, in which, obviously she does not live alone... Her secret is discovered in turn by the detective's assistant, before he too, is murdered. The husband next discovers her morbid passion and because he loves her still, in spite of every-thing, he sets about covering her, protecting her from the consequences of her demented behavior, from human retribution, from the police and from the lover who, when he discovers the impossible truth, decides to blackmail her. Commissioner Dolan is standing on the back of the large "S" and smoking his pipe. He says "I suppose many of you have often wondered who the Spirt is behind his mask...and how he came to be." In the subsequent panels he goes on "lotta you older folks will no doubt remember Dennis Colt, the famed criminologist of the late nineties -- broke up several big gangs. When he died his son, young Dennis, followed in his footsteps. Well, since my only child was a daughter, he sort of became a son to me and I helped him in his career of criminology. One night I was sitting in my office brooding over the case of Dr. Cobra, who was responsible for poisoning two European cities...he was at large in Central City...suddenly... And then the first page ends.

One-third is the cursèd number in political psychology: in many Western countries over the past century, ~1/3 of the population prefer authoritarianism to democracy.
That's about the proportion of Germans who voted to make Hitler Chancellor & even now in Europe, 1/3 of whites want authoritarianism.
Snippet from magazine interview with political psychology professor Karen Stenner. Question: Your analysis of the 2016 EuroPulse survey, which was conducted in all 28 European Union countries plus the United States, concluded that 33 percent of white respondents were predisposed to authoritarianism, while 37 percent were non-authoritarian and 29 percent were neutral. What types of responses led you to conclude that someone had an authoritarian predisposition? Answer: I usually gauge latent authoritarianism with a low-level measure of fundamental predisposition: typically, respondents’ choices among child-rearing values. For example, when asked what qualities should be encouraged in children, authoritarians tend to prioritize obedience, good manners, and being well behaved over things like independence, curiosity, and thinking for oneself. Pitting this bare-bones measure of authoritarianism against any variety of conservatism, and the whole roster of sociodemographic variables—including education, income, gender, class, and religiosity—I have shown that authoritarianism is the principal determinant of general intolerance of difference around the globe.

I always say there were two kinds of Gen X homes. The ones where the Satanic Panic was an absurd joke, and the homes where it was treated seriously, as if Satan’s minions were fighting to enslave the nation.

It couldn’t have become the national hysteria it was without that second group.

This approach, of course, is quite familiar to communities that have been dealing with police abuses for as long as there have been professional police forces. In 2000, then–New York City Mayor and future Trump adviser Rudy Giuliani justified the killing of the Haitian American Patrick Dorismond by police by quipping that he was “no altar boy.” Embarrassingly for Giuliani, whose capacity for shame was overestimated even then, it turned out that Dorismond had literally been an altar boy. Dorismond’s mother responded to the campaign to justify her son’s killing with an observation that continues to haunt me decades later. “They kill,” Dorismond said, “and after that, they kill him the other way—with the mouth.” Taking Good’s life wasn’t enough. The moment she died, it became imperative for the administration to also destroy her memory.
