The story of Europe’s economic decline is everywhere. But it is wrong. Gabriel Zucman dismantles three myths behind the idea that the US is ‘soaring’ while Europe stagnates.

Decline, what decline? The myth of dying Europe
There is a widespread view that, by comparison with the USA, Europe is in economic and social decline. But, Zucman argues, it's not true

The takeaway is not that journalists make absurd predictions. This was a blunt, but reasonable headline in 1996. It's that outcomes that seem highly unlikely/wildly optimistic do happen occasionally due to agency. Bulgarians and Europeans took forks in the road over the yrs that made today reality.
An article from December 1996 warns that Bulgaria has no chance of joining Europe and the euro would replace the lev only after the second coming of Christ. Brace yourselves, the euro replaces the lev tonight at midnight! 🤣(and, of course, Bulgaria did join the EU in 2007).

This morning has brought more disappointing news for the UK economy. UK real gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have increased by an unrevised 0.1% in Quarter 3 (July to Sept), compared with growth of 0.2% in Quarter 2 (Apr to June) 2025. At first there is some relief that the third quarter was not revised lower. But then one spots that the second quarter of 2025 was.

As some EU leaders lose sight of the big picture in Russia’s war of aggression, reminder of 2 of my pieces: this on consequences if Ukraine loses: www.cer.eu/publications... ; & this on what Europe must do to ensure it doesn't: www.cer.eu/publications.... Only change: funding UA is now more urgent.
Does it matter if Ukraine loses?
Ukraine is retreating and Russia is advancing, militarily and politically. Western leaders seem to underestimate both the impact of Ukraine’s defeat and the West’s ability to prevent it.

Apparently there are new government comms directors, huge teams of press officers, and scores of comms Spads for ministers.

So what are they doing? How can they apparently have issued virtually nothing about the value of Erasmus?

Or are there those in Number 10 who don't want more EU reset?
On which note (UK government effort) - pretty dismal in terms of pushback against costs of Erasmus plus. Potentially forgotten if other negotiations deliver in a year's time. But a reminder that far better government comms over EU ties are needed in both London and Brussels.
