Another cis feminist for trans rights. She/her. Not quite a crone. Bad-faith arguments get you muted, slurs get you blocked. I repost a lot of geekery, some of it NSFW.

So a while back I was commissioned to do short bios of various rock stars, and they were just about universally total psychopaths, with the huge exception of Freddie Mercury. A lovely man who did good by his wife, his lovers, and his cats.
Today (24 November) marks the passing of Freddie Mercury, lead vocalist and pianist of the rock band Queen. He remains regarded as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music.

I misread this image so badly that I can only really hope to illustrate what I saw.

I'm really upset by all the articles I'm seeing that treat him like he's not a murderous psycho

One of the more interesting twitter fights I ever got into was when anti abortion laws were starting to ramp up, some folks who i don't know how well meaning they were, started posting herbal abortifacient recipes.

To which my response was a not at all measured NO DO NOT EVER DO THAT 30 tweet rant.

It's tomorrow across the pond, but today in the USA we're over $36,000 thanks to 250 good people who've mashed the "Donate" button: www.gofundme.com/f/the-libera...

Sending cheers now to contributing editor Toby Buckle, who only writes bangers for us, such as the one published a year ago last week:

just saw someone on tumblr describe HP as “the first fandom” like. I know you people are desperate to keep funding a transphobe bc the thought of reading any other book is too hard for you but this is housewives writing kirk/spock fanfic in carefully xerox’d fanzines erasure and I won’t stand for it

feeling extremely something to see some peanut go "you haven't given people a reason to *not* pirate books" juxtaposed with said peanut talking about the kind of queer representation they want in media

unfun fact: a lot of queer creatives are broke as shattered windows, and piracy doesn't help

FFS, if you don't want to use Amazon, use Kobo. Or pay a dollar on Itchio.

And if you're really skint, borrow from the library! Yes, libraries have ebooks, and Libby is a free app!
"Fuck Amazon, it's not like they aren't screwing over authors!!"

Amazon pays me 70% royalties on ebooks. You downloading my shit from Anna's pays me *nothing* you dumbass little shit.

"I'm so poor" - And? A bunch of you are steal from my poor friends who are struggling to buy groceries, too.

The result is that, while not openly against trans rights in the way right-wing regimes are, liberal states end up de facto oppressive for trans people outside a fairly small swath of gentry.

One in five of us ends up incarcerated, we're an overwhelmingly working class demographic. You do the math.

We need it. Not only are the classes full, but also concert halls, libraries - we've gone to a bunch of classical concerts this year as an antidote to despair and guess what - they are full. They were not as full before, but they are now.

"Humanities are shrinking" is artificially imposed top down.
"While other universities report that the humanities are shrinking, at Berkeley, the opposite is true. The music major is the fastest-growing major on campus. We are finding bigger classrooms because film is exploding. English is back to the numbers we saw 15 years ago. We are hiring" bit.ly/4ohKuOe

Yes, school refusal due to bullying and/or mental health issues absolutely should be covered (I had a period of school refusal, so I get it.) But it's a bit bizarre that there is no mention in this increased school absences story of the recently introduced virus that kids get regularly now.
Reported illnesses have tripled in some school districts. Some say mental health is a factor https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/school-absences-illness-mental-health-9.6988661

Like, you could write an entire book length case study in "ways Roblox completely fails at Trust and Safety". I advise every parent I know to get their kids the fuck off Roblox, or at the very least, directly monitor who's contacting them and what they're playing *extremely* closely.

it's wild to think that about one CEO ago ago, people were looking at Google and Apple as brands they wore in their personal lives as badges of honour and in the space of less time than it takes a cicada to mature the consensus is now that they are the enemy of public safety
it is absolutely the tech companies fault that people now assume they’re doing something evil and sneaky even when they actually aren’t (regarding the latest Google kerfuffle)

like, no kidding that people have zero willingness to cut big tech the benefit of the doubt anymore
