you want to understand it elsewhere in the anglosphere, look up video nasties. Censorship, even of the worst kinds of art, is prudish horseshit, and it gives ammo to people that will absolutely wreck your most benign art. @taylorlorenz.bsky.social has been talking about this a lot wrt KOSA, and if

And the second you give any censorship ammo to the right, they will use it on bullshit crusades to clear queer people and anyone who isn't saltine cracker ass white out of the visible part of the culture. If you really want an understanding of US censorship culture, read about the comics code. If..

A lot of these people calling for censorship didn't grow up in eras where it was pervasive. You don't want that shit back. Like if your memory of TV is only from the last 15 years, you have noooo idea what it was like even 25-30 years back, and it was even worse 20 years prior, and worse.. etc.
i am going completely insane watching gamers make up shit about horses and interrogating every single thing the devs have said for inconsistencies and then deciding well it probably had cp in it. this is the easy mode version of the kinds of censorship that are to come and you're failing like babies

people are extremely ready to put everyone but the sex offenders on the sex offender registry. we know who the predators are and some people will, consciously or unconsciously, project that onto anyone else instead, to create an external villain rather than one granted power in their communities.

and again, this attack on trans identity has been withering, brutal, and extended. if you are concerned about free speech, you need to be very concerned about a university firing a trans grad student for trying to do her job!

marginalized people are targeted for censorship *regardless of their opinions* because the main thing people want to prevent them from saying is simply "I exist."

the idea that the real danger to free speech here is that a Christian wasn't allowed to spew hatred without evidence in a psych class seems like a fundamental confusion endemic to a lot of 1st amendment discussions.

there is a years long moral panic ongoing to force LGBT ppl, and esp trans ppl, out of public life. their books are banned; they are being targeted in secondary and higher ed; their healthcare is being slashed; their passports are being revoked.

the problem is that the TA appears to have been the target of a deliberate campaign to silence trans people and force them out of public life. so, it seems like that should be a factor when discussing the first amendment? 1

This is bananas.

But also faculty please now more than ever make your rubric on memos/ writing super explicit.

This would fail in my class because it doesn’t “meaningfully engage readings.” Protect yourself as much as possible from engaging on politics.

Hope this prof sues the shit out of them.

It's unsourced and self contracting. In the first screenshot she says she thinks "teasing" (bullying) to enforce gender stereotypes is fine, then spends most of the paper claiming it isn't necessary to force them, then tries to say she doesn't think it's right to.

It's absolute blather.

And the fact that OU has been cowed into suspending a professor who had the barest of academic standards is TERRIFYING because the theocracy is billowing at an increasingly rapid rate and our collective standards are all at risk.

The future of our leadership for the next generations are at risk.
