I think I bristle at "write your spec" / "just write" as go-to advice because it baffles me why someone would think the people most in need of Writing Advice are the people who don't want to write.

There's no reason why a Del Toro-esque approach to production design and colour coding and costume design shouldn't ALSO be done in like a Rom-com or a drama, or a wacky comedy, not just fantastical type cinema.
