Really enjoyed talking with @brooklynspoke.bsky.social and @sgoodyear.bsky.social while they were in San Diego promoting "Life After Cars." They met me in Balboa Park (in the pouring rain!) so we could see, hear and discuss the ways cars have impacted our most precious public spaces.

Have a listen!

What would society look like if people no longer needed their cars? That's the premise of the new book “Life After Cars,” written by Doug Gordon and Sarah Goodyear.

Today on Volts: for years, I've wanted to do a podcast on indoor air quality, and I finally found the perfect guest! Dr. Lagoudas & I discuss indoor air pollutants, the policies and technologies that can control them, and the growing need to frame indoor air quality as a basic human right.
What's the deal with indoor air quality?
From CO2 monitors to better building codes, Dr. Georgia Lagoudas outlines how to clean up the spaces where we spend 90% of our lives.

I won't start ranting about it because I just get myself worked up, but quickly: I literally can not think of an investment of public funds that has a higher return than *cleaning the indoor air in schools*. It's so easy, so cheap, & has such HUGE payoff. Criminal that we basically don't do it.

From LIFE AFTER CARS:

• Name an issue affecting society right now, and there’s a good bet it is caused or at least exacerbated by society’s overreliance on cars
• Our climate and our own health can no longer withstand the assault of the automobile.

I haven't had a car since 2002 and I love seeing some people's faces when they hear that, it's like I just slapped them or something, like how dare I reject the Very American Requirement of car ownership.
Wild. We always say on the podcast that owning a car is required for effective full enfranchisement in most places of the USA because we are such a car-dependent society, but this is...next level. They say it like it's disqualifying for office.

[wild speculation voice] a significant portion of LA's hyper obsessive health, fitness, and hiking culture can likely be attributed to the primal subconscious compensating reaction of living in a car dependent wasteland that is antithetical to the existence of people or even life itself.

I sold my car in Seattle 2.5 years ago and the amount of money and stress I’ve saved since then is unreal. When I find myself inside a car these days I feel claustrophobic. I also feel more connected to my neighborhood and city now.

Also insane. Washington State has the second highest Human Development Index rating. On par with all the countries everyone freaks out about being so amazing...... and Seattle is what drives that. INSPITE of not being nearly as progressive as those "dream" countries.

Americans need to normalize using ground floor mixed-use walkable district infrastructure first. Also, America has vastly more retail space than other countries, and a lot of it is car dependent and spread out. Ground floor commercial needs to be concentrated, walk/bikeable, and not oversupplied.
