I'd wager most Angelenos have been positively impacted by Beutner's work, whether they know it or not. aside from the requisite westside jab at SB 79, this is a great primer on LA's newest mayoral candidate

(not mentioned, but he also got free bus passes for LAUSD students!)

I think there's around 90 qualifying station areas in LA, meaning he's claiming there's, on average, 1,000 rent-controlled duplexes within half a mile of every Metro station in LA. bless your heart, Larry

dont get cute with me. actually why
do i say that? that sounds adorable

God his Instagram comments are such a mess because of all the blocking. but I'm really enjoying his claim that more than 90,000 rent-controlled duplexes in LA are threatened by SB 79? that... doesn't feel accurate

WRONG. SB79 provides no protections for rent controlled duplex units. There's are over 90,000 rent control duplex units in Los Angeles that are at risk under SB 79.

The passage of the SB 79 bill and more than 40 other housing reforms this year could be a turning point for a state crippled by its self-inflicted housing shortage econ.st/4n3Tupm

I brought my husband along to the SB 79 victory party and after an hour or so of observing us talk policy & local implementation, he said, "You are a nerd. like a real nerd, worse than me and my friends get talking through a new Magic set."

I don't care if you hate YIMBYs. You can smear us all you like. But any CADEM regional director that presents such blatant falsehoods about the "loss" of rent controlled housing needs to be kicked out of the party.

I only replied to him a single time (telling him SB 79 didn't do what he was claiming, I think?) and apparently he has also blocked me 🏆

SB79 is a big (wonky) win 🎉 Every one of those should come with explainers like this - clear, illustrated, and with important nuances, caveats, and motivations called out.

…but were too afraid to read about in the actual bill.

SB 79 does not apply to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland. Please stop wasting my time with such foolish inquiries.

Media outlets from WaPo, NYT, AP, and CNN to Newsmax are refusing to sign the Pentagon’s new gag-order press policy in a rare moment of total bipartisan media unity. This is the way. We can have different ideologies, but we must have a free press.

eh, the NIMBYs already do that. I'm sure they'll start using it as one of their arguments, but it'll be the same people who were gonna oppose transit anyways

This is the kind of smart, multi-modal transit that is illegal to build in most American cities

Now that SB 79 has passed, hopefully it changes incentives for transit agencies to redevelop the land they hold for surface parking near stations. Just rode past Pomona North and saw that Metro added a new surface lot to compliment Metrolink's existing one.

spoiler: they shouldn't be worried! they might end up sharing their block with an apartment building, and if they want to sell, they'll likely be able to sell for higher because their land just became more valuable

this also only applies to a tiny percentage of R1 zoned land in LA
