I don’t subscribe to his newsletter but his points resonate.

LLMs are primarily pattern matching and token prediction making it unlikely that this is a foundation for actual intelligence even though they mimic intelligent behavior.

Wondering if the US regime is going to launch its first strikes on Venezuela proper now, on the Thanksgivings Holiday, because most people won't be following the news so closely, and I wouldn't expect people on the streets either.

He has a great analogy about LLMs vs AGI.

Student A is LLMs: they’ve memorized every textbook and ace familiar tests, but fail when patterns break.

Student B is AGI: they grasp first principles, reason through new problems, and don’t depend on memorization. The age of research is about Student B.

The counterquestion, I guess, would be:

"Do large parts of society still hype or run with the hype on AI, or have they moved towards a more realistic view of it?"

Well stated.
AI is a very general term, you have to be more specific. Do you mean the AI that stole my copyright, the chatbot causing teen suicide and psychosis, the deepfake porn of women without their consent, the bots driving political division or the ones polluting communities and driving electric bills up?
