I’m a scientist who loves history and writing. On here I mostly boost people way cooler than me, but I post my own work on occasion.

I freelance as an ML engineer and am currently: open for new part time contracts.

I just don't buy arguments that all this cruelty against immigrants is a mean to some other end. It can be used that way, but it's worth remembering that Nazis diverted resources during wartime to make sure to kill Jews.

Reminder: All it would take to end the murder of American citizens by an untrained government goon squad is 16 Republicans in Congress voting with Dems to defund ICE (or 23 to impeach and remove Trump — 3 in House & 20 in Senate). That’s it. 23 Americans can vote for the public and end all of this.

ICE are abducting 5 year olds, using them as bait to get to their family, and shipping them to a Texas concentration camp all in a single day.

We need a Nuremberg for everyone involved. Abolish ICE isn't enough.

You know you’ve found the right web source for ML theory / diagrams when the text is in Chinese and there are dancing anime girls in the background.

I’m starting to think China will win the AI arms race. Not that doing so will matter as much as Washington thinks it will.

Another great paper by Erik Hoel, uses philosophy of science to constrain potential theories of consciousness.

The title is a bit misleading as the disproof is of current models only. The Kleiner-Hoel dilemma does not proscribe the consciousness of near-future models.

A Disproof of Large Language Model Consciousness: The Necessity of Continual Learning for Consciousness
Scientific theories of consciousness should be falsifiable and non-trivial. Recent research has given us formal tools to analyze these requirements of falsifiability and non-triviality for theories of...

"this is not who we are" is 90% of the time a normative statement of aspiration, it's not an empirical claim of "these events have never taken place in this country before". one of the most obnoxious genres of "actually..." is reacting like it's the latter when it's clearly the former.

The winner of the 2025 bergruen essay competition is some dude who thinks AI can’t possibly be conscious and whose only argument is human exceptionalism and mathematical misunderstandings.

He misrepresents *multiple* of my areas of expertise, not only computer science but also complex systems.

chainlink by @dollspace.gay is incredible! Forcing claude to break up large changes into chunks let me catch multiple mistakes and turned it into something I could actually rely on. Very cool.

So correct me if I'm wrong but we've had the kidnapping of a sovereign head of state, the open murder of a random civilian by the gestapo, the bowing out of virtually all of the US's international treaties and accords, AND the ramping up or the annexation of Greenland in ONE FUCKING WEEK.

WTF

The list of U.S universities betraying the fundamental principles of academia and the scientific method continues to grow.

The University of Oklahoma must be destroyed. It should lose accreditation and all papers from affiliated researchers should be rejected. To submit to an apparatchik is to die.

Boston public library is amazing and libby is a treasure of humanity.

I’ve been wanting an app that recommends me less popular works that are still awesome, turns out your local library has that on lock already?

This is why I support freedom of expression.

Appropriately, it is the chaos of a system that supports free speech that gives rise to the grand process of democratic self-governance and the ideally upward arc of human progress and flourishing.

If a university’s choice is between dying and becoming subject to the whims of an apparatchik the university must die.

Texas A&M should lose accreditation. Journals should not publish articles from researchers affiliated with Texas A&M. Conferences should not invite nor admit Texas A&M researchers.
