As a long time romance reader, I agree so hard.

Contrary to popular belief, romance authors are damn fine writers at some of the most difficult things in craft. Characterization, tension, believable relationship building, for example.

We can tell when you just want our money & don't appreciate it.
Romance should evolve, but its so clear when people want the shine and financial benefit of Romance without respecting the genre, its conventions, or the readers. It's disturbing, but not surprising that we've arrived in a place where CRAFT DOESNT MATTER is a thing people believe.

*lobs fresh discourse grenade* one day we’ll have to talk about cover art and character art that’s better than the actual book.

Everything went wrong when people started calling them romance books instead of romance novels and iykyk.

I saw the most bonkers conversation on tiktok where people were arguing that Romance doesn’t need an HEA and authors were fighting for their lives in the comments trying to explain what a genre convention is. Again, trying to sell me a mystery with no crime and see what happens.
God we need more craft discussions and less fights about which tropes are good or bad that play out in a way that makes it clear no one even understands what a trope is anymore.
Romance should evolve, but its so clear when people want the shine and financial benefit of Romance without respecting the genre, its conventions, or the readers. It's disturbing, but not surprising that we've arrived in a place where CRAFT DOESNT MATTER is a thing people believe.

“Experts” also noted that 831’s books (& covers) are intentionally not appealing to existing romance readers. Experts also shared that nothing they’re doing is new, as a marketing concept or within romance publishing.

But why report on experts when you can fawn over the insane basket of baguettes?!

This is about the 831 Stories puff piece in the NYT. (I should have known better.) Several romance scholars were interviewed (myself included)…not that you could tell, given the complete lack of substance.

Hrm, wonder why this was left out? Maybe because it doesn’t align with 831’s narrative?

I don’t think I’ll do interviews about romance with “journalists” anymore.

The same boring shit about romance gets published over and over because any viewpoint that doesn’t validate the romance stereotype or “romance is different now and bigger than ever!” narrative is excluded. #romancelandia

I first saw this company name in those early tchotchke pages of Vanity Fair, so I knew instantly they came from the funding world and not the rolance world.

Romance is powered by sincerity and many readers can tell if you’re flinching away from it, like so:

The idea that romance needed venture capitalists to come up with innovations like this is … kind of too funny for me to get heated about it.
