Literally no one needs the sequestered cardinals and "raw dogging" in the same sentence. Please. Haven't we suffered enough?
CBS on the cardinals: "One thing we know they're not doing is checking Instagram because their devices have all been confiscated. I believe the kids call it rawdogging."

This is how it starts. With people you don’t know, maybe you disagree with.

They start to go away, to disappear, maybe you barely notice.

This is how it starts, but this isn’t how it ends.

You know this, because you know history.

This is a wildly dangerous sign — the idea that there are only five SCOTUS votes for paying congressionally mandated invoices for work *already* done!? This should be as basic a test of Article I as you can get. And that does not bode well for decisions to come.
BREAKING: On a 5-4 order, SCOTUS denies DOJ’s motion to vacate Judge Ali’s State/USAID order, but notes that his prior deadline passed, so Ali is going to have to go back to the drawing board and “clarify” what the gov’t needs to do, “with due regard for the feasibility of any compliance timelines.”

For any REI members who may not realize there is a Board election, or that it is contentious, see this. I ended up supporting one and not supporting the other two. do your research, make your call and VOTE.
If you're an REI member, you can vote to toss out the board that's endorsed Trump's candidate for Dept. of Interior and has worked to stop REI unions. Vote runs until May 2nd. Spread the word. vote.escvote.com/REI/

MAGA in DC just being told that Trump just said the inauguration will now be inside: “So we’re not gonna see it in person? I don’t like it. We came all the way from OK. We might as well stayed home & watched it on TV. It sucks. We have farms. We don’t get to not feed the cows cause it’s cold.”

Dear meeting organizers:

Picking the same senior PIs to keynote/give talks at meetings, who's talks I've seen a dozen times already, is not a great use of everyone's time. Nor does it highlight all of the rich talent in your field from more junior folks and peeps not at "elite" institutions.

Hot take with AI playing a major role in the Nobels this year: I think NSF and NIH should make people proposing AI projects to submit an energy usage estimate. How much energy will you burn on this and where does the data center you’re going to use draw power from?

I would say based on my last 4 years on study section (12 panels: ~600 grants discussed) even saying 80% exceeding the modular cap is a low estimate. Modular proposals are now a 'one in a blue moon' experience.

Investigators: ask for what you need.
The community has now moved on from the modular cap with almost all R01 applications exceeding the $250 K cap.

Investigators who stay below the modular cap are disadvantaging themselves.

Everyone with power should be pointing out that the emperor has no clothes, not bowing and scraping.

Yeah, we're all worried about funding, Marcia. But some of us are worried about people more.

Science is based on data. And in our current environment? That's what makes it incredibly political.
In the wake of the U.S. election, Natl Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt has authored a spot-on editorial in Science, stressing the apolitical nature of science and how it remains vital to informing a lot of public policy. Best read all week!! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This never works. Politicians make anything political when it suits their needs. Of course McNutt also claimed it was apolitical not to address the multiple Title IX cases against academy members. She too, uses “political” when it suits her.
