Abolish Private Parking
That parking lot is largely empty much of the time, especially the south part of the lot. That's a big plot of land to be so underused in that area.

London wasn't a cycling city until it was. Leadership matters.
Proud to see London is fast becoming a cycling city ⤵️

📈 Daily journeys are 12% up from last year to 1,500,000 trips
📈 Up by more than 40% since 2019

This is just the start, we’ll continue working with partners to improve safety and invest in more routes.

Yes, If NYC/the Bay were more affordable, people from tons of other metros would move there!

That would also make *those* metros cheaper, & people from their suburbs would move in !

Nobody is suggesting everybody from Cedar Rapids would up and move to NYC (but some might!)
The idea that if Brooklyn rents were at Dallas or Houston levels anyone would still choose Dallas or Houston over Brooklyn is kind of insane
While it’s probably true that housing costs are keeping people out of CA and NY, there’s this notion that middle America or the sunbelt will empty out and depart to Brooklyn if Brooklyn built more units, and I’m pretty sure the people who believe this all live in Brooklyn already

remember kids, ride in the bike lane instead of the sidewalk or you'll get a $108 fine 😬

With respect, if cities want scooter riders to ride in designated cycle lanes, they need to build them everywhere. Shaming users for choosing the option that keeps them safer, when the alternative is sharing unsafe streets with speeding multi-ton vehicles, is unhelpful at best & harmful at worst.

An interesting thought experiment is to replace every word “cycle” in the article with “car”, and every word “cyclist” with “driver”

See how it reads. See the difference in the language used when we talk about the two modes?

It doesn't help when traffic "engineers" insist on counting pedestrian volumes that won't be there until the crosswalk is installed.

Been saying for years the CVS at 32nd and University needs this. Dead strip mall vibes with massive underutilized parking lot in the heart of urban uptown.
Are there any plans for that with the Vons in San Diego? The North Park location and the one on Adams would both appear to be prime locations for such an approach.
Almost every Safeway in San Francisco is planning a total rebuild into "housing over grocery." At least three recent proposals. Meanwhile, zero proposals from Safeway in the East Bay. sfyimby.com/2025/11/prel... sfyimby.com/2025/11/perm... sfyimby.com/2025/11/bern...

"Painting a crosswalk is cheap and easy. A group of neighbors can paint an entire intersection in one morning for $100 or less. Getting the city of Los Angeles to paint a crosswalk, on the other hand, might take 14 years and the death of a 9-year-old boy."

Might meaning = they still might not do it

Overheard last week while biking on Beach Dr, near DC, closed to cars:

Dude 1 “I really want to move to Minneapolis. It is just so awesome.”

Dude 2 “You ever been there?”

Dude 1 “No.”

Dude 2 “Is this about bike lanes?”

Dude 1 “Just all of it.”

I'd also like to see mandatory re-testing every five years when drivers renew their license. There were no bike lanes or green pedestrian crossings or multimodal roads when I got my license.

It's pathological that the most coddled special interest group in society is in constant fear of being quote "punished"

Yes, HID headlights are very bright but the bigger problem is the proliferation of gargantuan vehicles with 5’+ hood heights so that if you’re driving a normal sized car their headlights are at your eye level rather than seat level like they’re supposed to be.

Checking out the Valencia St bike lane. Unbelievable how much drama there was to get a parking protected bike lane here. More bikes and scooters have passed us than cars and there's still plenty of space for car parking, parklets and 2 travel lanes.

This is a helpful tool to understand just how different a car is from a bicycle

A crossover SUV does *149,483 times as much damage* as a bike per trip

150,000x the damage.

I've reported this hundreds of times to the City of San Diego. Unbelievably, guidance against blocking bike lanes with road signs is even in the car centric CA version of the MUTCD.

After a while it really starts to feel like it's done intentionally.

My absolute favorite fact that most people don't seem to know and which is counterintuitive is that induced demand works in reverse too.

Add more lanes for cars? More traffic.

Take away lanes for cars? Traffic goes away.

I think he makes an excellent point - we should all pay for the road infrastructure according to how much wear and tear we impose on it. So bikes are still free, small cars cost a bit and idiotic deathtrucks cost a HUGE amount.

In the Netherlands, over 40% of rail passengers arrive by bike. Since 2012 the country has invested €400m+ to add 200,000 new bike parking spaces at stations. The result? More rail use, fewer car trips, lower congestion and emissions, better public health - and far more efficient use of urban space.
