It's easy to kill and keep killing with a car in California.

"Drunk and drugged driving is now so common in car-centric California that drivers routinely rack up four, five, six DUIs. One woman in Fresno just got her 16th."
15 DUIs, still driving: California's failure to take repeat drunk drivers off the road
As alcohol-related roadway deaths spike across the state, a CalMatters investigation finds California has some of the weakest DUI laws in the country.

Person driving a Prius runs a red on Florida St makina a right turn right in front of the 215, two cars blocking the bus lane in front of The Lafayette, and a person in a car running a red at 30th to make a left in front of the 215. I’m so glad someone else is doing the driving. So much stupid.

London wasn't a cycling city until it was. Leadership matters.
Proud to see London is fast becoming a cycling city ⤵️

📈 Daily journeys are 12% up from last year to 1,500,000 trips
📈 Up by more than 40% since 2019

This is just the start, we’ll continue working with partners to improve safety and invest in more routes.

In San Diego, we just get narrow sidewalks, poor lighting, and the roar of compensation vehicles.
Rush hour traffic in Utrecht.

Sound on 🔊 if you want to experience that rush hour IS possible without the constant, deafening noise of cars overpowering people talking.

San Diego too often does the bare minimum so as to avoid annoying people driving cars. What could happen if San Diego instead focused infrastructure improvements on those not in cars, especially in the urban core?
📣New data shows London cycling is soaring:

📈 12% up from last year to 1,500,000 daily journeys
📈 that's 43% up from 2019

🚲Cycleway Network grows to 431km (up from 90km in 2016)
😎 & 76% of London cyclists feel safe our routes

Running a red light and killing someone would result in a whole **one** year in prison if convicted as charged. It's way too easy to murder with a car with minimal consequence to the person driving the car.

Are there any plans for that with the Vons in San Diego? The North Park location and the one on Adams would both appear to be prime locations for such an approach.

Bus 325 on Route 11 was one of the two worst smelling MTS buses I’ve ever ridden. This time the smell was vomit. I exited the bus at the next stop and am waiting for the next bus 30 minutes later.

It's not as if the ways to reduce traffic collisions resulting in deaths and serious injuries is a well-kept secret. It's just that San Diego continues to lack the political will to do enough of those things. #VisionZero
“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas & city center in 2021.”

So we shouldn't build higher-density housing in safer locations because of the people that built low-density housing in the riskiest locations?

Is that what Epstein would have wanted?
Trump Admin is planning to ask Congress to dramatically cut funding for transit as part of the 2026 infrastructure law.

The proposal would eliminate the transit account, which funds billions of dollars in capital expenses. It would also prevent states from “flexing” roads funds for transit.

I would have thought revenue from automated traffic enforcement would have been an easier lift politically and would have the added safety benefit. The latest proposal for parking fees in Balboa Park is more complicated and raises far less revenue than originally envisioned.

San Diego refuses to do automated enforcement for anything - red light violations, speeding, or blocking of bus lanes and bus stops. Is that more of an apparent third rail than charging for parking? Why?
Genuine question I was thinking about yesterday as I watched someone run a red light 2-3 seconds after the walk signal turned on - if there are cameras on every stop light in San Diego, and the city of San Diego is broke, and people are getting mowed down by cars, why not ticket red light runners?

I see those things every day. Today it was a broken flex post between the trolley tracks at the north entrance to the City College Transit Center. Did someone going east on C Street try to veer right following the tracks through the transit center?
When you move around primarily or exclusively by car, you may not see the evidence of car crashes around you:

bent sign posts
broken car pieces
broken windshield glass
tire marks, etc.

For those who travel by 🚶🏻, 🚲, 🦽 & 🚌 these reminders are everywhere on sidewalks & streets.

That street had a 25 mph speed limit and only two lanes, one in each direction. It was well-designed for safety. We often limit speeds of scooters and e-bikes, supposedly for reasons of safety. But far more lethal cars continue to get a pass.
