You don't necessarily need traffic lights and stop signs to keep traffic moving smoothly. Especially in places with low car traffic, traffic is perfectly able to regulate itself with just a few small design elements (shark's teeth, zebra crossings).

Living in Utrecht means living in a beautiful historic city, founded by the Romans 2000 years ago. Now the 4th largest city in the Netherlands, heart of the most competitive region of Europe and most cycling friendly city in the world.

Need to be convinced? Just watch the video!

Rush hour traffic in Utrecht.

Sound on 🔊 if you want to experience that rush hour IS possible without the constant, deafening noise of cars overpowering people talking.

Even in the world's most bike-friendly city, there's still plenty of work to be done.

Three years ago, Utrecht completed the transformation of the Sint Josephlaan and turned an unattractive, unlivable car sewer into a green city boulevard.

It shows that even Dutch cities were not always like they are today and have often come a long way in becoming better versions of themselves.

After almost a year's absence, Cargoroo's yellow rental cargo bikes are back on Utrecht's streets.

Ideal for anyone who occasionally needs to transport something or someone and doesn't want to be dependent on a car.

The cargo bike fleet is expected to grow from the current 90 to 150 in 2026.

100% true!

On a bike, we're more equal as a family than in a car, where we, as parents, sit in the front seat and direct contact with our children in the back is much more superficial and functional.

Cycling together creates memories; driving together doesn't!

Active commuting with children is often cited by parents as quality time spent interacting with their child and the environment, rather than time spent isolated in separate metal boxes.

"With nearly 1/3 of all trips made by bicycle Utrecht shows what can happen when cycling is fully integrated into urban planning."

Congratulations to @degemeenteutrecht.bsky.social, topping this year's @copenhagenizers.bsky.social index of global cycling-friendly cities!

Cycling after dark is part of everyday life here, but it still raises real concerns. This week I look at what helps people feel safe on those night-time rides – from lighting to travelling together.

New post and video.
Cycling safely after dark
We have entered the darker months again, and that inevitably makes cycling a little more precarious. Safety after sunset has two sides: being visible to others and feeling socially safe. As cyclists we cannot lock ourselves in, as one might in a car, so the environment matters all the more. Being visible is straightforward. A working front and rear light, together with the legally required reflectors, is usually enough.

🎉 According to the Copenhagenize Index 2025, Utrecht is the most bicycle-friendly city in the world 🎉

"Utrecht demonstrates what can happen when cycling is fully integrated into urban planning: a city built on flow, precision, and purpose with cycling at its core."

Investing in cycling to address the housing crisis? That's exactly what the Dutch government is going to do!

€2.5 billion is being invested to make housing projects accessible. A large portion of this will go towards cycling infrastructure, such as continuous cycle routes. 👌

"Thank you, tire, for getting us safely to football".

Dutch car industry just reached a new low with this shameful and disgusting ad, using kids to promote their dependence on cars for activities they can do independently by bike.
