The famous yellow and blue Dutch public transport bicycle (OV-fiets), with which nearly 6 million trips were made last year, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. For this special occasion, it's now available as a limited-edition balance bike for toddlers! 😍🤌

De Snelbinder cycle bridge. Opened in 2004, attached to the side of an existing 1879 railway bridge, it runs for 2km linking Nijmegen to Lent by bike, alongside trains. Same crossing, different century. This is what decades of serious investment in cycling and sustainable urban planning looks like.

Very good that The Netherlands does not participate. Hope more countries follow. Spain and Ireland are also out and rightly so.

45 minute timelapse of Vredenburg in Utrecht, which can only be used by people on public transport, walking or cycling. Buses do not get delayed in queues or behind people cycling and people cycling are kept safe. You get safer cycling, faster transit, quieter streets, and a city that actually works

The Netherlands is investing in better intercity cycling routes, but progress is never uniform. The F58 from Breda to Tilburg shows both the ambition and the unfinished links. I rode the entire 23.5 km and traced the remaining works — new post with details and video.
How complete is the F58? Assessing the Breda–Tilburg Intercity Route
Recently Breda announced, via a short video on Facebook, that the F58 continuous-cycle route to Tilburg had been completed. The video’s title — “Did you know the continuous cycle route from Breda to Tilburg has been finished?” — prompted quite a reaction. “Don’t make me laugh,” wrote one viewer. He also pointed out a stretch of brick pavers in Dorst, to which someone else replied: “They were either out of money or out of asphalt!” Even so, …

Bike parking right next to the supermarket entrance and cycle lane. Not hidden, not second-class, but prioritised. Want more people to shop by bike? Then make it an easy and accessible option. Convenience drives behavior.

This is the Neude in Utrecht. It spent decades in the late 20th century as a car park before being returned to the people and becoming a vibrant public square once again. Your city could do this too - it’s a political choice.

For most of this video the property-line-to-property-line width of the street is 68 feet / 21m.

A standard Chicago street is 66 feet.

There's room for everyone if you demand two extra-wide car lanes and two parking lanes on every single street.
A mile of Utrecht's Amsterdamsestraatweg w 300 businesses, buses, freight & 20K bikes/day was rebuilt last year. It's so good

2.5m bike lanes on both sides of the road
1.8m sidewalks
1.4 million pavers
116 new trees
5 new plazas
new lights bus shelters & sewer lines

...58 fewer car parking spots
