Free public libraries are right up there on the list of best things we have done as people.
We library folk do a good job talking about all the free services we offer, but I don’t see many of us talking about how libraries are one or the only places where you can use services without being advertised to.

The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

My beautiful art deco lady is finally finished! I added some metallic thread in a few places and despite how much I hate working with it, it came out exactly like I'd hoped on her bodice. #CrossStitch #ArtDeco

This is your occasional reminder that, if you like Neil Gaiman's stuff, but can't bring yourself to like it anymore for justifiable reasons, Tanith Lee is the author he is credibly accused of extensively cribbing from, and her work is on Audible, and AMAZING.

based on how often the naughty teens of major cities throw the rentable scooters directly into the river i've formed a theory that the many iron age swords and cauldrons found in lakes around europe that we've previously assumed were ceremonial and sacrificial in nature were in fact thrown by teens

I'd much rather someone who doesn't want to display their face for whatever reason represent themselves with, I dunno, a photo of a weird novelty table lamp they found in a thrift store than some AI nonsense.
By which I mean: make it obvious that it is not you, & that there is no ‘you’ worth perceiving. Represent yourself abstractly. Use a crude drawing as your author photo. Don’t ever claim you’re ‘from’ somewhere. Hell, show us nothing. We’re not owed.

But pretending an AI mockery *is a photo* sucks.

A thought:

one other complication in the wake of AI faking both faces & words is that a non-zero number of writers want or need anonymity for all kinds of reasons, but do not require AI images on their social media to stand in for them. Embracing a kind of ‘earnest manufacture’ is more just.

Reading letters from the Princess Liselotte of Palantine, the German sister-in-law of Louis XIV, and it's wild because she had this super informal writing style that almost sounds like modern texts

Like at one point she goes "wish to god my son didn't love holding chunks of bread like a peasant"

on a related note, a crude photoshop or paint job will ALWAYS be funnier than a photorealistic AI generation
