🚨 IMPORTANT: If you begin playing Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace at exactly 11:38:48 PM then Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray will say “Ah, Victory” at exactly midnight. Start the new year off right.
(I get that this is all reactions from emotion, but think people should maybe think through the incentive structure a little bit more clearly on "Even if you vote the way we want and the way we demanded, we will still oppose you and attack you and insist you secretly wanted the opposite to happen")

I think Dems should have held out longer. They held on enough to make Dear Leader bleed, and Congress is likely to wind up in the trenches again rather soon in one way or another, and Dear Leader will bleed yet again.
And even the deal will make him bleed, because of the idiotic FSA gimmick.

Yeah, with respect, @jamellebouie.net and a lot of the other Fight Faction ppl on this site are wrong.
The Fight was the point, and the Fight got Republicans to openly do a fuckton of absolutely horrendous shit out in the open, and basically break their House majority as a functioning organ.

Sincere question: what does victory look like?
Because maybe I'm missing something but I don't see any viable path to actually getting reconciliation subsidy shit reversed
The game was always raise salience, and an up/down vote w/dem language sounds like that to me

i think this is key. taking the deal would amount to taking the blame. it would turn a clear political victory into an unambiguous defeat.

Notable in this regard that not only was leadership clearly not on board with this but they also declined to give these 8 senators any cover.

I think it's a mix of
1) them having held out for so long
2) it not being the usual suspects voting yes here
3) them getting SOMETHING out of it (even if not enough to many)
4) this CR only being through January
5) more people being seriously hurt by the shutdown than last time

(the BlueSky rage on here actually feels notably smaller / less fervent than in March, which I think really is testament to a mix of things like the value of the leadership actually fighting)

Well: the most successful shutdown ever by an Opposition Party, without failure. Still think we could have gotten more political benefit from it, but it ain't nothing.

No. No, no, no. This is Trump's shutdown no matter when or how it ends. Without his foolishness we could have avoided all of this.

If the Dems blink after all of this, for a deal that all but ensures no ACA subsidies in 2026 anyway, then what was the purpose of letting the shutdown go for 40 days in the first place?

Full funding of SNAP is a real win* for Dems, and almost certainly would not be happening in a world in which GOP went nuclear on the filibuster.
*Assuming that's correct, and assuming the full $$ actually is spent. Big assumptions!

Tentative Senate deal to end shutdown, multiple sources tell me & @frankthorp.bsky.social:
—CR through Jan 30
—Approps minibus
—Fully funds SNAP
—Reverses Trump’s shutdown RIFs
—Promise of Senate vote on ACA subsidies by Dec second week (details/outcome uncertain)
—Led by King/Shaheen/Hassan

(Chuck Schumer had literally nothing to do with this and is voting against it)
Chuck Schumer is caving in on ACA extensions the right way.

As we get more details on how this seeks to be shaking out, guess I’ll update my basic view from “seems like a dumb deal they shouldn’t take, also not one I’m going to get TOO exercised about given the relatively low stakes in the politics and the very real harms to be weighed against”

(I will also quietly note one more time that every single person insisting the Dems had SO MUCH LEVERAGE should probably be asked to list all the meaningful policy gains the out-party has ever won in a shutdown prior to 2025, including when operating with *majorities*. Hint: the answer is 'zero'.)

Indeed, it’s almost like “stove touching” is a horseshit framework which gets thrown around wildly on BSky by people who seem to think it makes them sound tough

(seems clear something is up with the Senate but it's also all in flux and I don't really get the point in reacting one way or the other until we have some better idea)

There is no positive benefit to the best growth of sports gambling.
But there are nearly infinite downsides.
Like, whatever your opinion of government regulation is, sports gambling has to fit within the world of acceptable subjects of regulation.

Breaking news per Jeff Passan: “Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been indicted by prosecutors in Brooklyn on a host of charges related to a scheme to rig bets on pitches thrown in MLB games. Ortiz was arrested in Boston earlier today. Clase is not currently in custody”

More from Passan: “The 23-page indictment against Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz lays out the alleged scheme for the pitchers to intentionally throw balls so bettors could wager on pitches to be balls or strikes. It started, prosecutors say, as early as May 2023 with Clase and later included Ortiz.”
