in retrospect i guess it was inevitable there would be attempts to frame any pushback against tech as the same "annoying hippie lib busybody" stereotype the left has been getting hit with for decades

Another very good example of the Times spreading fact free propaganda.
It has been bad for a long time but feels like it’s getting worse over the last months.

FIDE's official position is that women are lesser than men. they simply cannot have a person with a male name also have a title from a female competition that people might think was from a male competition.
I find this bit especially baffling.

When it comes to death in Gaza, apparently everybody has lost basic math skills. It was 39,000 killed by December 2023. Every building in Gaza is in ashes. You have seen footage of dead Palestinians every day since. You have seen verified footage of mass graves. Do the fucking math.

all anyone is ever doing by saying stuff like this is admitting they're a useful mark the right can exploit to push their wedge issues further. amazing that otherwise smart people still don't realize how this game is played
I'm sorry, but there absolutely ARE legitimate concerns.

A kid with XY chromosomes who identifies as female but hasn't medically transitioned in any way is a trans kid. And THAT SPECIFIC trans kid probably should not be playing on the girl's basketball team despite their identification as female.
Buttigieg said parents have legitimate concerns.

To be clear: If you cannot be relied on to unequivocally defend transgender kids, you can’t be relied on to defend anyone or anything.

New blog from me about collecting social media data. I talk about the ethical, legal, and practical considerations of accessing this data and offer practical tips on how to create large datasets.

Researcher access is increasingly restricted but we can still do our work

NEW: Am told over the weekend that Sarah Champion’s letter calling on the PM to recognise a Palestinian state has now been signed by 254 MPs.
A *third* of the Commons has called on the PM to recognise Palestine as a state. Never seen anything quite like this.

This is one of those moments when the hollowness of our democratic systems becomes visible to the public. Facts are verified, but deliberation is pure performance, and accountability is nowhere. The system absorbs truth without ever acting on it.

He accepted a caution which will now show up on his DBS checks which he's trying to get removed.

Everyone should know that a caution will stay on your record and you should never accept one without getting advice from a solicitor you trust.

No caution, no comment. Find a solicitor first

Funny how "legitimate concerns" are always those of a far-right minority

The concerns of the communities at the sharp end or that of the many more opposing the far right are just incoherent noise

As always, the mainstreaming of far-right politics is a top-down, mainstream-driven affair
Asked about the far right protests outside hotels housing asylum seekers, Labour minister James Murray tells Sky News that it's "absolutely right for people to protest about this"

wouldn't necessarily say that "giving the racist rioters exactly what they wanted, and showing them that rioting works" can be seen as "having dealt with the issue"? I mean I guess it is in a way, but www.ft.com/content/7fa5...

Violent or destructive left wing protest is framed as delegitimising the protesters' stated cause.

Violent or destructive right wing protest is framed as emphasing the need for urgent action on the protesters' stated cause.

As always, right wing men are treated as elemental forces without agency.
This is a bit of a atretch/hope: there were 5 protests, with the largest two being up to 300 people, a total of around a thousand or so people.

I recently complained to the BBC about their biased news coverage and in the reply they said that they have a duty to report the world as it is, not how people wish it was.

Aside from being patronising guff, it would seem they’re quite happy to avoid how the world actually is when it suits them.
BBC news currently has no article on this. According to organisers, it broke their own records by far and was the biggest trans rights events in the world.

Otoh the BBC does have coverage of far right anti-refugee protests which were much, much, smaller.
