I’ve read a bunch of stuff but one of the most clear headed pieces was the MN StarTrib sports column by Jim Souhan and the part that sticks with me is just a half sentence in the middle alluding to the obligation of pro sports team owners to the safety of their workers (think arena cleaning staff).

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara: "People have had enough. This is the third shooting in less than 3 weeks. The MPD went the entire year last year recovering about 900 guns from the street, arresting hundreds of violent offenders, and we didn't shoot anyone ... this is not sustainable."

Longtime #Dinkytown shop owner Greg Ketter is the 70yo you may have seen in a TV interview speaking his mind and walking away into a gas cloud. The September 1985 Southeast (Minneapolis) neighborhood newspaper noted his shop's move from above Gray's Drug to a street level entrance around the corner.

Witnesses are being taken to Whipple.

From a lawyer friend: “They’re trying to keep local PD and BCA from getting statements and confiscating any phones with video.”

Like everyone in Minneapolis I’ve been tear-gassed. Part of the crowd on 27th and Nicollet, first an ICE agent went through w a bucket filled with different gas-bombs, handing out likr trick or treat, then they lit them off for no reason I could see. They act like Crips or Bloods, just criminals.

As you are reading this news from outside the state, please understand - this is a very dense, mixed residential and commercial area where families and kids hang out. Where I’ve been with my children countless times. This isn’t a “protestor”. This is a bystander hanging out on a Saturday morning.

this is what’s nicknamed “eat street”, with tons of diverse restaurants, many of them immigrant-owned, surrounded by housing, a short walk from the Minneapolis Institute of Art and across the street from a record store. it’s my neighborhood

ICE kills a person and then “transports witnesses to the Whipple building”. I can’t imagine a less safe place to be right now.

I was never a big fan of those "how would this be covered if it happened in other countries" takes. OTOH, I do need everyone who's not here in the Twin Cities to understand that we have officially reached the "murders and disappearances" stage.
The Minneapolis Police Dept is now outnumbered and outgunned 3:1 by an out of state white supremacist gang with military grade weapons.

That's how we need to think and talk about this.

I am not sharing a lot of out of state reporting on this moment, I am sharing this.

“We can’t ignore the outright misogyny and homophobia baked into this incident—and yes, erasing Good’s wife from the story of her life and death is also misogyny and homophobia.”
