It’s noteworthy that at this rate Karen’s columns on the subject will very soon outnumber the trans girls playing at even remotely competitive levels in this state.

What I learned from Miss Major was persistence and also keeping a sense of humor. I was lucky to see her work in various organizing meetings over the years. She was a model of how to be a good elder. Truly grateful for everything she did to make the world better. Time for the rest of us to continue.

As @imarajones.bsky.social reminds us, “There are some people who are possibility models, and others who create possibilities. Miss Major is one of those, alongside Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson, who made it possible for trans people to have space in the world."

Her legacy will live on in the work of so many she touched throughout her rich and beautifully authentic life. She will be forever with us.

We need to move away from a world where the only answer to crime (or the perception of crime) is more policing. Pairing better approaches with community engagement & investments in housing, jobs, and health is a path to breaking out of our current unsustainable cycles of harm and spending.

Collaborative leadership, community trust, and a focus on solving the crimes that are most harmful to communities.

There’s a lot I could say about the political contours of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA); but the same reason it’s become a vehicle for advancing anti-LGBTQ+ provisions for military service members and their families is the same reason there’s a path to repealing those in the future.

Threats, hate, and destruction don’t put us on a path to peace - they make us all less safe. In this moment, it is up to us to stand up against hate, lead with kindness, and find a way to draw all our communities closer.
