It’s noteworthy that at this rate Karen’s columns on the subject will very soon outnumber the trans girls playing at even remotely competitive levels in this state.

What I learned from Miss Major was persistence and also keeping a sense of humor. I was lucky to see her work in various organizing meetings over the years. She was a model of how to be a good elder. Truly grateful for everything she did to make the world better. Time for the rest of us to continue.

As @imarajones.bsky.social reminds us, “There are some people who are possibility models, and others who create possibilities. Miss Major is one of those, alongside Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson, who made it possible for trans people to have space in the world."

Rest in power, Miss Major 💔

Her legacy will live on in the work of so many she touched throughout her rich and beautifully authentic life. She will be forever with us.

Honored to have had the privilege of meeting her before her passing.

We honor the legacy of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a fierce protector of our collective freedom. Our hearts are with her loved ones and all who carry her vision forward.

An illustration of Miss Major surrounded by candles with blue background and a famous quote of hers written in gold. The quote reads“I don’t need their permission to exist; I exist in spite of them. I want you to train and teach and love on and create families within my community and gender non-conforming people, so that we can understand that we have a culture, we have a history, we have a reason to be here. We have a purpose. We’re entitled to be loved, and seek happiness, and share that with the people that we care about.” -Miss Major Griffin-Gracy

Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Today and every day, I am proud to be Indigenous. We are resilient, we are still here, and we will always be here in Mni Sota Makoce.

My latest is the story of how my community has rallied to protect and defend our neighbors in recent days, as ICE has targeted the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. "This is not a story about a moment of victory, but a moment of being reminded of our power."
They Came for Our Neighbors. We Showed Up.
Before long, there were dozens, and then hundreds of people in the streets, watching and responding.

Great to have the opportunity to stop through the opening reception for Queering Indigeneity at the @mnmuseum.bsky.social - what a beautiful collection!

A wall with words interspersed with baskets reading:

A Community without Two Spirits
If you ask nice, Nokomis (Grandma) will tell you when the Two Spirits were here. When their braids were long, and they fought what they fear.
When they sweat where their spirit led them and they brought special medicine to their people.
If you sit real still, Auntie will whisper about when the Two Spirits were here. When they fought to stay alive, and some had to hide.
When they kept loving where their ode (heart) took them,
Even when the nuns took them.
And if you beg your brother, he will tell you that he remembers when the Two Spirits stopped coming to ceremony,
because no one included their stories.
They were misgendered, and rendered a burden.
"Too sensitive!" When they were told there are no roles for them amongst the cisgender women and men.
When will we fade away?
Will it be tomorrow? Or today?
Brother said, "That's when their medicine left forever.
Solutions became less clever.
Inclusion was close to never.
And with them went soldiers for language, warriors for peace."
The genders we brought to the table were no longer there for feast.
I hope these are just the nightmares we must wake up from on the bad days we have had to face.
But sometimes, it feels all too close.
A community without Two Spirits is a community I fear most.

A pink wall with a hanging bag and photographs overlaid with beadwork. Writing reads:

Every room I walk into
Becomes a Queer space
Becomes an Indigenous space Becomes a Two Spirit space

I wrote a little about some of the little details you might have missed in this video and why it hit me so hard as a trans person this morning:

Speaker Johnson just declared the House will remain in recess all next week. This will mark a full month off; the chamber has not been in session since September 19.

Couldn’t get any great pictures because I only had my phone with me, but always a joy to see them.
A blurry picture of two distant bald eagles in the sky.

I was out walking and saw a pair of bald eagles flying together overhead.

Seeing them is always a powerful reminder of the possibility of change and recovery.

We need to move away from a world where the only answer to crime (or the perception of crime) is more policing. Pairing better approaches with community engagement & investments in housing, jobs, and health is a path to breaking out of our current unsustainable cycles of harm and spending.

MIT rejects "compact" proposed by the Trump administration.
MIT prez wrote: it "would restrict freedom of expression and our independence as an institution" and "is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone."

None of that makes it any easier to see harm done in both this proposal and last year’s NDAA package. LGBTQ+ service members & families deserve better.

We have work to do on pending funding bills. Stay engaged & make sure your reps know funding can’t come at the cost of our health care and rights.

There’s a lot I could say about the political contours of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA); but the same reason it’s become a vehicle for advancing anti-LGBTQ+ provisions for military service members and their families is the same reason there’s a path to repealing those in the future.

Threats, hate, and destruction don’t put us on a path to peace - they make us all less safe. In this moment, it is up to us to stand up against hate, lead with kindness, and find a way to draw all our communities closer.

In addition to the events of last night, in the last few months alone, we've witnessed a devastating shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church, a fire and break-in at the Alhikma Islamic Center, and disgusting attacks on our Somali community.
