In my observation this is a big motivator for cross-border regional identity, eg emerging pan-appalachianism. People look for cultural surface area old and new to build on natural solidarities, and reliance on the mason-dixon as a hard map of a hard territory simply makes less and less sense.
also kinda inescapable now that the dixiefication of rural american is directly linked with a homogenizing reactionary turn
I understand why some white liberals from the Deep South want to insist that there isn't something distinct (and bad) about Southern political culture but the problem with this is that we wouldn't even have this idea of "The South" as distinct from the rest of the US if there wasn't a there there

Watching disabled people around the world mourn Alice is a reminder of the good aspect of the internet. 30 years ago, few people outside of SF would ever have known Alice existed. I never would have met her. The internet connected us all. Let’s honor Alice’s memory by using that power and community.
My social media is wall-to-wall love for the incomparable Alice Wong, and I need more words. What captures sadness and/also affection for a community that knows what's been lost?
Alice could not eat food for years.

And yet at Christmas she would bake cookies and mail them to me—such was her desire to provide care for the people she loved.

It is hard to come up with a better analogy for whiteness than preferring the AI simulacra of your supposed authentic art form to whatever a Black woman from your art form’s cultural geography might make.
As long as it's not Beyonce country music fans are fine with this development
