Hard to overstate how concerning this is. There are over 46,000 people, a school, and a hospital in the flash flood warning area. Washington communities have been bracing for levee failures as another round of atmospheric rivers arrives to full rivers and saturated soils.

Since I retired, I do greatly miss the teamwork and community support attached to disaster response, but I am also glad I left before AI became much of a thing. It is one more unnecessary complicating factor in an already massively complex problem set.
Folks on Washington state community Facebook groups are arguing about whether images of local flood damage are real or not. Generative AI is making it so much harder for people to get the reliable information they need to make decisions during disasters.

Turns out you can, in fact, have a backbone, stand up for the most vulnerable among us, and win. Well done, Seattle Children’s.
BREAKING: Seattle Children's Hospital successfully fought this summer to get DOJ's invasive trans care subpoena quashed.

The Seattle court partially unsealed the case this week.

This was the fourth, previously sealed case mentioned in this recent Law Dork report: www.lawdork.com/p/judges-doj...

It’s incredibly sad this needs to be said.

Thanks to all responders helping Washington communities affected by recent floods, including the National Guard, out there doing what they’re meant to do.
If you see National Guard service members out in our communities, they're here to keep Washingtonians safe. I deeply appreciate the work they're doing.

This is very good news and quite surprising. A previous disaster declaration request by WA state for a damaging bomb cyclone was denied, so it wasn’t at all guaranteed we’d see federal assistance for recent floods.

The question now is whether emergency relief will be followed by disaster relief.
I just received a phone call from Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. Secretary Noem informed me that the president signed our request for an emergency declaration. We have also received written confirmation of that emergency declaration.

I first learned the term "snow drought" in 2015, when we received normal amounts of winter precipitation in the Northwest but record winter warmth left us with very little snowpack. That summer saw dire outcomes for fish and agriculture due to record low stream flows.

I talked to @heyjohnryan.bsky.social at KUOW about adapting to increasingly strong atmospheric rivers, and that reducing risk ultimately requires tackling GHG emissions.

"If we don't do that, atmospheric rivers are going to keep growing stronger...It's going to overwhelm our ability to respond.”

It's also the warmth - while historically such events may have seen more precipitation fall as snow at higher elevations, warmer temps mean more falls as rain and goes directly into streams and rivers, while also melting lower elevation snow.

Snow levels were up to 8,500ft yesterday. In December.
Catastrophic flooding in BC and WA is putting thousands at risk.

We’ve always had heavy rain and floods; but as the world warms, they’re becoming more frequent and severe. And it was a UVic research team that ID'd the human fingerprint in increasing extreme precip. www.nature.com/articles/nat...

Thinking of all those facing flooding in Skagit County and across western Washington. Please stay safe out there, folks.
The National Water Prediction Service is forecasting 18 major floods and 15 moderate floods in our state.

Catastrophic flooding is likely. Please pay close attention to local officials and sign up for emergency alerts with your county. Find a list here: mil.wa.gov/alerts

Western Washington is currently experiencing record flooding from a series of strong atmospheric rivers. 12 rivers are at major flood stage. 100,000 people await evacuation orders.

Will some places see less severe climate impacts than others? Yes. Does anywhere promise safe haven? Absolutely not.
Climate migration is difficult to study, and even harder to predict, because a complex constellation of factors guides the decision to pick up and move. But some experts say a historic population shift has already begun, and Western Washington should start preparing now to become a “climate haven.”
Is the Pacific Northwest ready for a wave of climate migration?
