Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

Indeed they do.

This whole thread is well worth the read, but this post stood out the most to me. 😔
Parents who imagine they are owed a relationship w/children they abused, & abusive church systems that demand the vulnerable keep quiet share this in common: neither can conceive of a world where there are consequences for their own actions. 18/

This pieces puts into words something I have struggled to articulate: we can’t “both sides” our way through this with the people who support objectively terrible, abusive practices. I suspect many of us have changed the locks on some relationships, possibly before understanding why it was necessary.
This week I dug deep into the Paradox of Tolerance.

We might hope still to build a new house to replace the one abusive bullies are burning down, after centuries of decades of being enabled in the name of civility.

If we do, the new house will need new locks.

WHO COULD HAVE PREDICTED what every single wisdom text in the western canon to include Proberbs told us would happen when we put people of low character into power? Who could have known?

Tom Lehrer was indeed a treasure, and this story exemplifies his genius and wit. Imagine waiting 60 years for the payoff for a joke you propagated so long ago. Rest well, sir.
With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.

100%. It’s an argument that makes whatever was legal the baseline norm for ethical acceptability, and in Western history, what’s legal has always almost exclusively been what powerful white men decided was best for them.

I don’t think I’ve heard Frederick Douglas described as a man of his times.

Oof, yes. A close relative to this lesson is the things that broke my heart also helped fix my vision.

What a shame. It shouldn’t be this way. But here we are.
The evil within human nature has played only one song, through history, over and over. The only variations are the instruments it uses and the tempo.

I haven’t flown solo since September, and I truly enjoyed my lonesome and peaceful slow dance with the clouds on Friday. Bonus: Indian food for lunch in Bowling Green, KY. #pilotsofbluesky

THIS PARADE COULD HAVE BEEN AN EMAIL 💀💀💀💀💀💀
the contrast between the giant crowds protesting in cities all over the nation and the sad sparsely attended procession in DC of army soldiers with resting "this parade could have been an email" face is giving me life

Ran into Tyler from Dude Perfect at DFW one time. My kids got a picture with him.

These are all a lot of fun to read!
Right folks. Feeling rather down at the moment so bringing back an oldie

This isn’t just unethical, it’s a betrayal of public trust. And it’s part of a much larger Republican strategy to manipulate online discourse and make you think their ideas are more popular than they really are.

I don’t want to live in a world where people are in jail and barred from work for smoking weed but an unelected man actively abusing ketamine faces no repercussions for illegally seizing all of our data and making decisions that kill hundreds of thousands of people

The party of Law & Order pardoning those who attack (or plan to attack) political opponents for political reasons is tantamount to terrorism. The POTUS swore to defend America against both foreign and domestic terrorists.

The label Conservative doesn't seem to fit anything in contemporary American politics these days. Back when it did this is what it meant to me personally.

A) Above Everything,
the Constitution and the rule of law.

B) Natural Rights, Freedom, Liberty, Self-Determinism.

One thing I wish people understood about authoritarianism is life often looks more or less the same. Troops aren’t marching down the street every day; people go to restaurants, have their office jobs. But everyone knows that stepping out of line, even slightly, can derail your life with no recourse

NASA is something every American can be and should be proud of. And for every dollar spent on it, it returns more on that investment to the economy.
Example: Their 2023 budget was $25B, and they added over $75B to the economy that year.
This is a horrible decision.
The cuts "would kill the much-anticipated Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, an observatory seen as on par with [Hubble & JWST] that is already fully assembled and on budget for a launch in two years." Would also apparently close NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. Huge, HUGE loss for science.
Hey! It's bad! arstechnica.com/space/2025/0...

2/3 cut in astrophysics
2/3 cut in heliophysics
50% cut in Earth science
30% cut in planetary science

This is just such an incredible self-own, what are we doing?
