I always forget the National Dog Show comes on after the parade and then I remember and it’s such a gift.

Thankful for my wife, my dog, my friends, poetry (sure, why not), and that sweet soul music.

worst forest/trees problem in generations is that a canto is A SECTION OF A LONG POEM. THAT'S IT. YOU DIDN'T WRITE A CANTO BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT THE WORD LOOKED COOL ON YOUR MEMOIR. CANTOS ARE POEMS. THAT LANGUAGE IS DYNAMIC DOES NOT MAKE YOUR SLAMBOOK A CANTO AMERICAN OR OTHERWISE

This by Wendell Berry counts among my faves, stunning in its simplicity.

The impeded stream is the one that sings."

My annual reminder that the point of Thanksgiving is not to celebrate the pilgrims or any of that crap; Lincoln never mentioned them once in his proclamation. Thanksgiving is about being grateful for Union victories.

(Well, in Chicago, it was mostly about getting sloshed as of 1870).

Because yes, Thanksgiving as a national holiday has to do with the Civil War and not the Puritans or previously proclaimed days of Thanksgiving (of which there were hundreds) - so be sure, as you gather about the table, to give thanks for the victories brought by Union arms at Vicksburg & Gettysburg

Sometimes I write a poem, not a brilliant one but solid, solid in the sense that something long in my mind, something once inarticulate, is now somehow out in the wider world… and no one says a thing about it; it sinks out of sight like a conversation with the dusk.

There is always an analogy between nature and the imagination and possibly poetry is merely the strange rhetoric of that parallel.

The 4:30 class? Three people. New personal record.
One day I will finally learn to cancel Tuesday classes as well (morning class had seven people show up; afternoon class, only six).
Sex is great, but have you ever canceled your classes the Wednesday before Thanksgiving?
