yeah this is something i've seen a lot of in elite liberal circles: a kind of collapse of internal morale in the face of electoral losses. klein's interview with coates is probably the exemplar here. but it's a sign i think of how (elite) liberals assumed history had ended and lost their way
I think the most charitable way you can interpret a lot of Matty's commentary over the last few years is as the product of total despair.
You sure that’s the most indefensible part Matt

It’s also a fabulous way to legitimize what’s happening. Why? Because it tells the listener, you think this is bad? Listen to this worse stuff!!! Which normalizes this as, ah, well, that’s just America. Business as usual.

I genuinely don’t understand why you wouldn’t just Five Alarm Fire THIS!!!

People who say this are clearly speaking aspirationally about a shared American creed they hold dear. “Have you heard of the Trail of Tears?” is not a very helpful response, because they probably have and the priority right now is moral opposition to fascism and not fake-educating each other.
I fear my tipping point into madness is "Thus is un-American" posts in response to ICE terrorizing immigrants. I beg you to open Wikipedia (I would say a book but let's start small) and read up on The Trail of Tears, Fugitive Slave Catchers, Japanese internment, Indian Boarding schools & Jim Crow

by the way, all of this, dozens of goons, weapons brandished massive teargassing of public space, people beaten in the street, destroying two intersections on either side of my neighborhood, horror, all seems to have been to create a distraction to abduct crying two teenagers who were here legally
look what they’re doing to my city. apologies for the camerawork

My guess is midterms will happen but there’s gonna be a lot of voter suppression. Targeted terrorizing of voters for sure. Lotta brown people staying home. There’s gonna be the appearance of elections but it’s gonna be even more of a sham than it usually is. That’s my assessment.

I've increasingly come to view cynicism as the seedbed of totalitarianism, both because it can paralyze the opposition and because it implicitly validates the might-makes-right ethic of the authoritarian.
i have been reading Tom Ricks’ “Fighting the Good War” which is a military analysis of the civil rights movement, and one thing that comes abundantly across is that movement leaders and ordinary people made it a practice to refuse to fall into despair and cynicism.
