My favorite part of this whole conversation so far is how many people say that people who don't drive/don't like cars shouldn't have a say in car policies. Pedestrians and cyclists are still affected by cars and should definitely get a ssy in how they are used.
I’m so fascinated by how no one even tries to say it wouldn’t save thousands of lives. Policies that do this are good!

Not just the UK, last election in Ireland, far right parties had signs up saying "No Open Borders" and I am excited to hear their plan for closing the Irish border. You can't just import US ideas, find some stupid and hateful ideas of your own.
the americanisation of the british right wing is just pathetic, like you can’t even be your own kind of wanker any more

war on christmas (lol), bathroom bans (we don’t call them bathrooms here), DEI (we didn’t used to put those letters that way round), even 15-minute cities (what the actual fuck)

The discourse every time this comes up has mostly taught me that some people can only feel joy if they are breaking the speed limit, and I would humbly suggest these people find a new interest in life.
My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

Fewer video games about how awesome war is. More video games about the importance of effective public health. It's the only solution.
Propaganda. We thought that it was gauche and problematic to have government propaganda about public accomplishments and so people forgot about them. People consistently like the military more than ‘the government’ and you know what a large part of that is? They have an advertising budget.
I think about this, also in terms of vaccines, and really struggle with how you have a free society that doesn’t fall into this trap in one way or another. solved problems become invisible and the solutions become the source of conspiracy theories.

So far, this doesn't affect US citizens living abroad, but I'm starting to wonder how long I'll be able to visit family, if things keep going in this direction.
The decline of democracy in the US means you can’t visit the US if you commented on the decline of democracy in the US

Many people are hoping the Lizza series will end soon. I’m hoping it extends for hundreds of entries as it imperceptibly morphs into a romantasy novel about poignantly horny wizard-journalists who discover a mysterious tear in the fabric of magic itself

I like this headline, because the wording kind of implies that now that the wildcat has been identified, they can start looking for its murderer.

I have two confessions to make: I never really "got" Young Frankenstein; and I think "The Holy Grail" is actually pretty hit and miss. Great when it's great, but not overall amazing.
The movie listed at #1 is so incredibly misplaced that it calls into question the veracity of the entire list. It belongs on the list, yes, but SO MUCH further down. An absolute, credibility-wrecking flub. Boo, @variety.com! Boo!

To me, nothing captures the arbitrary capriciousness of life like dogs. Hedy was found stray and injured in a bog by hikers when she was a year old. Now, almost 5, she lives a life of comfort, and her favourite thing is going to coffee shops. Why should this happen to some dogs, but others?

This is the problem with a lot of politics-brained people, they don't believe in anything, except winning and losing. So policy is chosen not on right or wrong, but what they think will appeal to the imaginary "normal" voter.
There's something kind of sick about this headline. Like they honestly can't see the value of morality in itself, they can only think about things in terms of winning the game.
Imagine looking around America in 2025 and thinking, "What we need less of is morality."
