Just to clarify, I'm not necessarily accepting or defending the validity of "pirate metal" as a subgenre. One reason I'm doing this unit is because that will be part of my class's discussion next week, i.e. whether lyrical themes alone can consititute a subgenre, or just a term of convenience.
Are there an pirate metal songs about Zheng Yi Sao or Grace O'Malley, or is that subgenre just too full of incels?

Question for classicists: was Cornelia ("mater gracchorum") the first Roman figure to circulate their letters publicly? Was there anyone earlier?

(Apart from the fragments, the letters are mentioned by Cic. Brut. 211 and Quintilian IO 1.1.6)

Serious question (yes, it can happen):

We all know that a sponge on a stick was used by the Romans for wiping their bums, right? Well, what's the evidence? Seems very impractical to us.

Does anyone know?

I'm skeptical that there are many forms of substantial assessment where genAI might not be used by a clever but insecure student who otherwise claims to peers that they don't use it because of environmental concerns.

My institution believes that a 'portfolio' is 'medium' in AI risk, but...

A thread about the 'sponge on a stick'.

The only ancient sources appear to be from Seneca and Martial (well he would mention it wouldn't he?)

Note that word xylospongium in that article I posted up yesterday - doesn't exist. Not in either source, not in Lewis & Short or the PHI Latin Texts.
