Maqluba is fried eggplant, potatoes, chicken & cauliflower layered in a pot with tomatoes on the bottom & rice on top, then cooked in chicken broth spiced with baharat, turmeric, cardamom pods & bay leaves. Pot is inverted & served.

Today’s Metal & Premodernity class discussed the Vikings’ popular image & history, & the evolution of Viking Metal. Analyzed Bathory’s “One Rode to Asa Bay” in contrast to Alcuin’s account of the Lindisfarne raid. Ended by asking whether a “historically accurate” Viking Metal song is less “metal.”

Yesterday’s Metal & Premodernity class compared Roman constructions of “barbarians” to those of pop culture & heavy metal. We read passages from Tacitus’s Germania alongside Heidevolk’s song” Furor Teutonicus,” & then looked at receptions of Boudicca & the battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
