A thing of beauty. A coat of arms showing the six martlets from the Sussex shield on the right and a vase from our cupid on the dolphin mosaic. At the top is a twisted rope guilloche from the same mosaic. The shield is supported by two Dolphins Rampant. At the top is... and this is the best bit... Huxley the Golden retriever, also Rampant, but looking very very happy.

Astronomical #winter starts today. It's the shortest day of the year in terms of daylight with the sun starting to set later each day until Summer Solstice.

Something lovely for the weekend! A 1,800 year-old Roman glass flask shaped like a mouse!

My photo shows a small Roman flask made of translucent cobalt blue glass in the form of a fat little mouse, 14.6 cm in length. The body of the vessel is rounded and stands on four feet made from tooled trails of glass. A separate blob of glass forms the head with eyes, ears, and a pointed nose. The neck of the flask is funnel-shaped and slightly up-turned to look like a tail. The flask surface is decorated with trails of glass which have been flattened and notched. Modern scholars refer to this type of trailed decoration as ‘snake thread’. On display at the Met Museum in New York

While we are intrigued by the inclusion of the "Stone Age" at our *Christmas Through Time* event TOMORROW 🤔, we can promise it's going to be a BANGER.
A promotional poster with much writing. The key takeaways are that it's called "Christmas through time". It's the 20th December 10am to 3pm. It includes reenactors of the Stone Age Solstice, Roman Saturnalia, Saxon Yule and Medieval, Georgian and Victorian Christmas. All is included in the general admission charge.

I had the most marvellous day recently looking through the St. Pancras #Roman cemetery archive, looking for more so-called infant feeding vessels. Huge thanks to the 🏛Novium Museum, Chichester & to @romanpalace.bsky.social for allowing me access. So many lovely Roman pots!!!
Image shows me looking very happy in front of a selection of Roman ceramic vessels, including flagons, bowls, a spouted vessel and a lamp from one of burials at St Pancras, Chichester. Two small, ceramic roman spouted vessels, thought to have been used to feed young children. One is broken at the rim, the other had a post-firing perforation through the vessel wall, next to the spout.

Said to be from Populonia, in Tuscany, this mosaic emblema was probably part of the floor of a triclinium, a dining room, of a patrician villa. That lobster is magnificent. 🏺 #mosaicmonday 1/

This mosaic emblema features edible sealife from the Mediterranean, exactly what a patrician household could expect to serve to guests for dinner. Therefore, although its findspot isn't exactly known, it almost certainly graced the floor of a Roman villa's <i>triclinium</i> or dining room. There’s a giant lobster, upside down, with a white octopus, a moray eel, and several varieties of fish against a background of black tesserae. Roman, ca. 100 CE. Said to be from Populonia, Tuscany, near Rome. British Museum, London (1989,0322.1)

Looking up at a curved ceiling that is decorated with a mosaic. The mosaic shows some people treading grapes in two opposing corners and a cart of grapes in the other corners. There is a female bust in the centre. Much of the rest of the design is taken up with scrolling vines.
